Hi all. I recently got a 07 650fe and am just wondering about the high pitch gear whine I searched old threads and hear it in some of the vids but mine seems way louder. Like it's overwhelming. Much louder than exhaust note. No knockin or any other odd sounds. 2200 miles. Oil was clean but small deposits on drain magnet Screen was spotless and inspection of filter was no filings either. Any input appreciated Thanks

The berg valve train is really noisy because the cam chain isn't driven by the crankshaft- there's 3 straight cut cogs that link them. All of the cog slop adds up and with changing forces from the valve springs you get that characteristic noise.
The crap on your drain bolt is likely to be from the clutch if it isn't shiny and metallic. How loud are we talking here? Does it go away with rpm? Is your cam chain tight/loose enough? Someone knowledgeable will chime in soon!

the 2004-2006s had a 'light' clutch drum that resonated. the C clips at the back therefore have to be a good fit etc.
you must not contaminate 2001 stuff with 2007 stuff.
if the mains can spin on the crank, it will also make a whining noise.

its pretty darn loud I feel it is quite annoying really. most people think its gonna explode. don't know if the vids don't pick up the whine as well but its louder than the videos in other posts on topic

Maybe try changing to a slightly heavier oil. did that in mine to fix the problem of the oil blowing into to airbox. it also cut the engine noise right down and with a bit of experimenting I could run an extra 50 to 100ml depending on where I was riding
