Suitability of 650 supermotard

Hi all this is my first post and was after a bit of advice from those with Husaberg experience.

I am considering buying a 2002 650 motard and was wondering how suitable this bike is for general road riding and commuting. I would be using it daily for a one hour each way commute in peak hour traffic..

The bike is a 2002 model with low miles that has had the cam chain and forkseals replaced. The current owner states that she wont start on the key but will kickstart. So after reading a few posts here I assume that the stator is fubared.

I'm going to inspect the bike late this week and will check the plug colour, is there anything else specific to this model I should check for.

Is the bike even suitable for my intended use??

I am reasonably competent mechanically my other bikes are turbo Busa & Aprilia RS250 so regular maintenance dont scare me.

Thanks in advance for any information

To speak from my own experience:
with the utmost probability the bike will overheat in peak hour traffic...
Proposed solutions:
wiggle through the traffic jam while the other drivers flashing and honk their horns
or
mount a radiator fan. Check out this UHE thread.

The 2002 electric "starter" is intended to be a re-starter.
Proposed solutions:
always kick-start the bike and get rid of battery and starter.
or
update the e-starter system to a later model including the battery. Additional info
can be found in the Electrical Article of the Owner's Doc

I ride a FE650 motard on the street & have no starter. once you get the hang of kick starting it's fine.
I try not to spend too much time stuck in traffic as i fear the bike may get a bit on the hot side.
The beauty of having a bike is being able to weave through rush hour traffic.
Go for it. You'll have fun.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I love the look of the bike and cant wait to ride it. First ride prior to buying will be this Friday (bike is 250klm away) so any further input appreciated.

I own a 2002 Husa, they are well known to be not very reliable bikes, wich in my case turned out te be right.

Common problems:

- balancer bearing not good

- Rocker arm bearings of low quality

- Main bearing problems

- Stator problems

- Different cam profile than the modern bikes wich leads to valve problems

- Some 2002 have the weak aluminum cam sprocket

- Bad tensioner blade allowing for very little travel in the tensioner

-...

Use the search function on this site, loads of info.

If you, like me, love to work on bikes, want to learn a lot about engines and have a little spare cash for all the updated parts, go for it. If you want a more reliable bike, go for a 2004+ model.

i agree with belgique basterd,01 & 02 models do have more problems than the rest.
the problems they have can be fixed by updating it to later model upgrades, but is it worth the hassle or just buy a later model.what upgrades has it had ,if any?
i have a 01 model and went through the process of all the upgrades cost me a fortune ,but now i have a good bike that i will be keeping for a long time.
you win some and you lose some, here's fingers crossed for you.
