Stroking the 450?

I'm no racer, but I don't mind getting on it. While riding my 05 450 the other day wide open... I thought to my self, either my 450s getting slow, or I'm getting faster. Natrally, later that night the 550/650s came to mind.

Pricing a second hand engine is a cheaper alternative to a new bike, as the larger motors will slot right in if i'm correct?

But then, looking over the manuals/parts catalogs. I got thinking. Could I use the crank/ rod assembly from the 550/650, along with a Cylinder sleeve and cam chain, dropping them into my 450 case's?

Any one tried this yet?

Dan

no can do I'm afraid.

the longer stroke has slightly larger flywheels, at BDC you need a longer rod to keep the piston above the wheels. at TDC the rod is now longer and so is the stroke! we're taking 16mm or so. the rod ratio is quite short on a husey so you don't want a 550 stroke and a 450 rod for example.

best answer is what you said - 550 engine. the 550/650 have different headers to the 450 and also a different inlet rubber for the carb to mount on. Can't recall the rubber boot either????

the 450 would like a 41/42mm carb, a stronger cam for top end pull and the jetting. all will aid top end but the engine is very oversquare and 'frisky' as you know!

Thanks for your input Taff. I was reffuring to both Rod and crank *** as a whole from one cc size or the other (either the 550 Rod/Crank/piston etc)

I already run the 41mm (FS). And have given thought to a Cam and re-jet.

Dan

yes but ultimately, the rod throw is 5mm more, the rod itself is 10mm longer so you need to make the cylinder 15-16mm taller and you can't do that.

I see the Cylinder sleeve's are longer, Understandably.

So, the Cylinder plus its sleeve could not be used also Taffy?

Dan

the "sleeve" is made up of the 2 halves of the crankcase

ie there is no sleeve

what you could do is make up a sleeve to sit on top of the cases and accommodate the longer liner, although nobody seems to have done it yet its not going to be a hard job.

my 8yr old son has the machining skills to do this already, he's only lacking patience and planning :D I have a set of 550 cases that i will do this on one day

Arrh yes, Its clear now.

I've Seen your idea with Intake manifolds on Drag Cars Bushmechanic. And you would use the 550 Lining of course?
What about expansion caricaturists. Your idea would be a solid form yes? Or would you machine this as a Collar?

Dan

I would use the "650" liner or a bigger iron liner

yes machined alloy spacer collar or "head packer" made to replicate the water jacket dimensions of the 650 or 550 cases, you get the added bonus that the liner is better supported "halfway" up by the 450 cases but this also restricts water flow possibly enough to make a difference you might need to open up a few more water passages near the cam chain tunnel or enlarge the existing ones or you could machine away the top of the 450 block to open it right up.

Bushie, doesent the dude who makes those 750 kits (for sidecarcross and su-mo) make the spacer for fitting his stroker candy to the 6fiddy?? cant remember his name... Taff??

that'll be JBS racing. yes, same principle I suppose but he STARTS with a 628 and then strokes it. He had cronic sealing failures at the beginning but I can't recall him continueing with it.

Yes Aazza I believe it was a steel packer made as part of the larger iron liner

looks like they don't use that idea anymore but are at 108x83 with outrigger bearings on the crank ends to stop the crank spreading, pic truncates but try the link

Ahh, see i thought it was a billet 'ring' with a longer liner shot down the guts of it.

I was wondering whether it was possible to stroke a 550, would like to do a 'Berg sidecar outfit, but 550 isn't enough when you've had a taste of an 836 multi :)
