Street legal in California?

I'm in Canada right now where through a bit of a loophole you could take OHV and make them street legal until recently. A friend did this with his 2008 Husaberg FS650C, beautiful bike that I want to buy off him.

But I am going to be moving to California before too long and have no idea if its even possible to make one legal in California, or if it would be grandfathered in by being BC legal.

Anyone have any ideas on the subject or know how the process works bringing an out of state/country motorcycle into California?

If it was previously titled in the US, you might get away with it, but chances are slim with a BC title sorry to say. You could drop it off to me in Oregon then I'll run some trackdays on it then give it back :)

If the bike doesn't have a 17 digit VIN, you have about zero chance of getting a plate.

It plated in BC and get a trail tech or any computer w/7500 Miles on it(or 13,000km). Bring down.

Get it plated BEFOR you move hear and then you can get a CA plate

You realize this is California we're talking about. It will never get through DMV here. They are starting to
revoke some of the dual sport bikes plates that were really just "off road only" bikes, with a Baja Designs kit
that snuck in.

Yeah, Calif. has this thing with dirt bikes from other states that have 7500 miles on them. I would check the details though - there are probably other little requirements for that to work.

California has a thing about dirt bikes, period. I went through this whole shabang 3 years ago with an XR400.
I finally quit, feeling like I was about to get arrested if I continued perusing it. Good luck.

k so I guess I have something roughly equivalent to the baja designs kit that was used to make it street legal up here. Finding a computer shouldn't be a big deal. Vin is 17 digits oddly shows a somewhat incorrect model.

This could be an interesting little project, I wonder if I can skip the inspection because its already my bike and it isn't changing owners. I think inspection would be a problem this thing is loud

What is the story with the dual sport baja designs kits though? Shouldn't it either be legal or not, not something you can get away with but might be revoked.

How many Calif. plated CRF450's have you seen. I've seen several. That type of bike was
never supposed to be street legal. Some how they they were given plates by the dmv and
those are the one's that are slowly getting yanked. Dmv is clamping down severly on
these kind of "Dual Sport" bikes. That's why I spent big $$ on the 2011 570, so I
wouldn't be subjected to any dmv scrutiny.

A dealer can get a dirt bike plated there is a way but I dont know all the ins and outs I do know that a out of state or out of country bike that is all ready plated and there is no chang of onership can get a CA. plate but it will have too be inspected by the chp and yes you have to have a odometer showing more than 7200 miles and this I now personaly it is parked in the garage

but like you just said above I to got a 2011 570 I didend want to deal with going out of state again

what there doing is only if the VIN is right on what the 7th letter

if its a used bike you have to remove the green sticker first at DMV with all your inspection papers first.

its the only way it will go through the computer system. Then add the plate, then re add a new green sticker.

its registered as dual use.

on a new bike certain dealers only are putting them through as dual use with plate first then adding green sticker.

new husabergs have the right vin # so its not a big deal.

Im buying my 2010 450 fe tonight and its ready for a plate and the dealer is doing everything so ill just get a plate mailed to me.

This one looks like its a red sticker from the VIN, does that mean plates are out?

How about them guys from OCC.They build exotic bikes with "selfmade"frames and other road unlegal stuff..After they finish the bike the first thing they do is go for a testdrive.
Are these bikes plated, and how can it be plated?

registered as experimental.

ive heard this is back up and ive heard in Ca with a dirtbike VIN its tough

Ask Jesse James about plating a bike in C.A. he got his *** handed to him from the DMV over this issue and so have a number of dealers with dual sports. I believe it cost West Coast Choppers its business or it was some of the reason along with the economy and Jesses extracurricular activities. I am not a big fan of his bikes, but I know the DMV was investigating and leveed major fines against them as well as two dealerships in So. CA for plating motocross bikes as dual sport bikes. In particular it was a Husky dealer I believe.

its one thing taking a experimental bike and plating it dual sport.

its all in the VIN# and husabergs have it. so no real worries

i have my new 450fe in my truck :) plate coming in the mail

Nice some used this as real world example? He did teach us couple rules of dealing with any DMV:
Don't do it as company
Don't be a chump.
Don't have TV crew follow you around.
Know the laws and your rights because the person at the desk will not. It easier for them to say no and not due the paper work. I know some years of FS were street legal in california.
