Street Legal in 2008?

I heard a rumour that some of the bikes will be street legal in North America for 2008, any truth to it?

I've been looking at the KTM EXCs because of this (like sooooo many other people), but would really rather a Husaberg. I realize that I could "Street" an FE, but because of laws (past and proposed) and personal situation I want quiet & legal from the manufacturer.
Considering how successful the EXCs have been since they came with a plate, hopefully it gets applied to the FEs.

If anyone knows, please tell me as I'll hold my deposit (that was going orange) for a 2008 Husaberg.

Depending on where you live in NA, the bikes are street legal now (it's all in the presentation, you know)

If it's true, it's the first I heard of it. You would think that they would leak something if it were true, since tons of people are picking up Huskies because they figure it's the only bike they'll be able to register in Kalifornia.

I wouldn't hold off on riding a bike in the hopes of it happening, if I were you.

thanks,

I doubt it. It costs a small fortune to homogolate a street motorcycle. I am a Husky dealer and the guys at Husky told me that it cost them over $100K to homogolate the TEs in 06. Berg is just too small of a market unless they could somehow piggyback with KTM, which is unlikely.

I know it costs a tonne for the companies, but KTM is discovering that it pays off big time.

And as for the bikes being legal depending on where you are, I have heard that. What I don't know is what happens if you get challenged on it by a cop?
The other problem may be if an 85db law gets passed here. Anyone heard of the Decibal Dawg? Does it work?

Hi there floored,

this has been discussed before, and in fact berger and I were talking about this general thought process a couple of weeks ago:

People often wonder why Husaberg doesn't pursue racing efforts, or in this case, getting their bikes on the road. They'd sell more, right?

Well, the fact of the matter is the distributor for NA receives a fixed number of bikes a year to sell. Last year, IIRC was just under 500. Chances are great that they're going to sell these bikes sans being road legal. With these numbers, you can understand how it wouldn't pay to do something like make the bikes legal for the road, or sponsoring Travis Pastrana.

Things fall into perspective a little better when you have an idea of the incredibly finite number of bikes the distributor is dealing with.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh.........I seeeeeee!

Bummer!

Guess I'll have to let "what I want" fight with "what I need", and see who wins.

Sorry about the late reply, I was just browsing around the forum. (It's just one of those rare quiet nights when i actually have a minute to myself)

Aaah... it makes me think of the Suzuki Gammas', boy making paper on one of those.... but I digress.

I have twelve units sitting here in New Hampshire... 07's in fact.(Call me 603-899-9992) All of these bikes are street legal, or will be befor they leave the shop...(here in NH anyway) Just put 118 miles on the FS 550e that I hope to own... I like the road manners, but I'll need the Avon's to handle the class-5 roads. 50/50 tires are a must.

(I need seat suggestions also...) Something that uses the stock seat pan, but allows more real estate for the rider... 3 hours in the saddle... I'm old...;-)

have you checked the laws where you live? i have an 02 fe 400 that is street legal in washington state.

Floored,
I just finished getting a plate for me 03 FE400. It wasn't the eaisiest thing to do, because the bike had no paperwork other than my bill of sale. If you want the easy and quiet way, almost any brand new bike can be plated in BC. You need the dealer to get you a NIVIS form. And if the word "off-road" is on it, just "edit" it off. You take the NIVIS to any autoplan agent and presto! street-legal. 5th gear motorsports in Ricmond is doing it at customer request for all the enduro Huskys( a nice option to KTM or Husaberg) The Husaberg dealers on the Island can probably do it for you as well. Good luck, and if you want any advice on plating a used bike give me a pm.
Aaron.
