Street legal FE501E

From the description of it, he seems to be having fuel issues. Carb might need to get cleaned and revised.

Sounds about fair, since it's already plated and have goodies.

Methinks you can talk it down a bit, but it's up to you.

I doubt a KTM engine would bolt right in.

Looks like it could be a fun bike, especially with the street plate, but it probably needs a serious mechanical inspection and maybe a looksee in the engine/carb.

Place a call to your nearest Berg dealer or other moto shop to see if they can help you with a 99 FE501. If help is available and you have a bike budget make an offer on the bike. If you're on your own and the budget is tight maybe take a pass.

Ditto. talk it way down... 98-99 in good condition can be had for less than 2k get it cheap and spend a bit making sure it is mech sound and it may be a fun bike,

Im kinda iffy on it, the whole smoking on startup could be alot of things. It is farther away than I want to drive but theres a chance he could meet me part way, so ???

It could be an oil leak or just a dirty carby. The 99s are good bikes. Anyway, work needs to be done, therefore you can lower the price. When a bike is advertised with problems, it is usually an "OBO".

I have the same bike in LA and it is plated as well. If dialed in it will keep up with almost anything. That engine is bullet proof. Good bottom, a little weak in the low mid then will rev to the moon if set up right. The KTM engine will add nothing to that bike, besides the chain is on the other side as well.

I have been up against 525's as well as recently a couple of 450's on fairly flat surfaces were I left the 450's behind. The 525 will stay up there but it has completely different set up with a really strong mid range. The old 501 has to be ridden hard to start working.

I think the smoke is carburation related and probably have to do with the choke circuit. It could even be the oil vent having spit up some oil in the air box from being overfilled. Just the way the ad is written leads me to believe that he knows very little about Bergs.

You have Boss within a couple of hours from Seatlle, I'm sure he can help you get this thing dialed in if you need it.

I think 1500 is fair if the rest of the bike is clean.

Just going by the photos alone, that bike looks to be in excellent shape! All the stock graphics and plastic looks to be intact which is rare for a bike of that age. I'd sure love to see it in person. I'm thinking someone's possibly going to end up with a very clean Husaberg for a very nice price.
