I have a '98 FC501 with no more than 10 hours on it. Bought it new back when, and only putted around in 1st and 2nd with my son who had a little 50cc at the time. Anyway, I was trying to sell it a few years ago after buying a new '02 KTM 250 EXC RFS. When picking up some new head pipes to fix what KTM put on the '02 250, I mentioned to the guy that I was selling the FC501. He said for around $500 he would get it street legal, including getting the plates. Sounded good but I was selling it. Fast forward, I didn't sell it, and after looking at a $3k price tag on a Honda CRF150 for my son, I am thinking the bike is worth a heck of a lot more than I could get for it, and maybe I should think about getting it "streetable" since I can no longer ride out of my garage to ride like a could 15 years ago, and hooking up the trailer and driving an hour is a drag.
So, I am wondering if anyone has experience getting a FC501 street legal? Since it is the MX model, I don't think it has the stator(?) to run lights etc.? Any idea if trying to street this bike in California is a reasonable things to do or not and what it might cost? I am thinking the guy may have been thinking it was the Enduro model, but since I wasn't interested, I didn't ask any further.
Thanks,
Dave
