Street legal FC501? California

I have a '98 FC501 with no more than 10 hours on it. Bought it new back when, and only putted around in 1st and 2nd with my son who had a little 50cc at the time. Anyway, I was trying to sell it a few years ago after buying a new '02 KTM 250 EXC RFS. When picking up some new head pipes to fix what KTM put on the '02 250, I mentioned to the guy that I was selling the FC501. He said for around $500 he would get it street legal, including getting the plates. Sounded good but I was selling it. Fast forward, I didn't sell it, and after looking at a $3k price tag on a Honda CRF150 for my son, I am thinking the bike is worth a heck of a lot more than I could get for it, and maybe I should think about getting it "streetable" since I can no longer ride out of my garage to ride like a could 15 years ago, and hooking up the trailer and driving an hour is a drag.

So, I am wondering if anyone has experience getting a FC501 street legal? Since it is the MX model, I don't think it has the stator(?) to run lights etc.? Any idea if trying to street this bike in California is a reasonable things to do or not and what it might cost? I am thinking the guy may have been thinking it was the Enduro model, but since I wasn't interested, I didn't ask any further.

Thanks,
Dave

You can no longer plate a dirt bike in Ca. The problem is that in order to get a street license the vehicle must now be Ca. street emissions legal. Most off-road bikes are off-road emissions legal (green sticker) which is not as stringent . The only loophole, if you will, is to use the special construction route. Unfortunately you should have plated it before the law was changed and you would now be grandfathered in.

Well one bright spot is that your SEM ignition does have a lighting coil, should you want to add lights to it for those night rides.

Thanks guys. I am in So Cal in the Santa Clarita area near the 5 and 14 Fwy interchange. Coronaberg tells me that there was a cut-off in 2004 to license these bikes, so great to hear about the lighting coil, but looks to be a difficult process at best. I was able to contact the same mechanic I spoke with a couple years ago who was aware of the law change, but wanted to make a few calls to find out more. I'll post what I find out for those in California.

Question. When converting a bike like my FC501, should I try to get FE parts or just buy something like a Baja Kit, or some of both?

Dave

Baja kit easy/ ugly FE -lots of wires hard to find but looks wright. blend using FE tail light license and turn signal holder with Husaberg headlight cover and turn signal holder and Baja designs voltage regulator and batt. Looks the best and works the best.Later Jeff

Really?, I just got mine last week for my '06 fe550e, it's still possible if you Know the right people. :D At least for a while until I get it revoked.

how about transfering the title to someone out of state, somewhere the laws are a little less stringent. Then plating it and transfering everything back to the original owner.Just a thought

Good Luck? Just went to a Orange County Dualies meeting and one guy talked to us about his 2004 Honda CRF 450 X . Seems he had no problem getting tags for his but he got the letter telling he registered it illegally and to send his pink slip in asap.So now he has to go to the DMV and get a new title for his dirt bike. Sorry this is going to happen but people that titled them after Feb of 2004 will loose it.This is a dead issue it has been talked about so much on other websites I can't see where people still have a question. Go to Thumper talk that is the website where people brag about how they got their bikes titled.I am sure a few DMV people have seen it . And the people talk like the DMV is stupid well we will see who gets the last laugh. I hope my bikes that i titled before the dead line are ok. Later Jeff
