Straightening the front forks

Having recently 'pranged' my 'ped' I am left with obviously bent forks.
Both the cartridge and the forks themselves appear bent.

Any suggestions on self straigtening, or would i be advised to get them done professionally, if so any suggestions as to where - preferably North England. ?

P.S. Why do i get the feeling somebody will say 'No i don't think they will straighten themselves' :)

I'd definitely have them checked and straightened by a professional. Depending on the level of damage you probably don't have the tools and equipment to straighten them properly. It would also be advisable to have the triple tree checked too. Those tend to get twisted and require straightening also.

The last time I bent forks I also broke the tripple tree. It was cheaper to buy used forks from a salvage yard and rebuild them than having them straightened. I think used KYABA's were aboutr $800 back a few years ago.
I'll probably have some wp on e bay when I part out my 2001 501 in a few weeks.

Straightening forks

Why don't you call Dave Clarke Racing his Tel: is 01772 612118 he can do the best job for you just because of the 48mm tubes we don't think that they will bend your lucky you have a Husaberg the jap forks are worse, the old conventional forks we rotated each week but the upside down we are stuck with pushing them the same way every ride. That's why the older the forks the faster the seals wear.

Thanks Guy's
I presumed Clarky would be sending them off somewhere and not doing them himself.
Interesting. Thanks. I will give him a buzz.
800 dollars being about £500 quid is way more money than i can spare, particularly as i'm not earning anything with my broken wrist.
I was rather hoping someone could point me in the direction of a suspension specialist thats nearby as 'mail order' would be awkward due to their size and weight.

Hi Ady
Try NTB at York, he might know someone. TEL-01904 750101. Give us a call if you want a hand taking them out and getting them there.

I had a nasty incident with a car a while back. My forks looked fooked. So much so that the independant assesor said ' you need new forks no doubt about that'.

When I stripped the front end and checked the tubes they were 100% OK.
Put it all back together and everything was fine, the front axle was well bent though, but they only cost £25.

I ended up buying another set of forks (supermoto valved TI nitrided etc etc) for the bargain price of £300. The insurance finally paid out £840 ish so I was a 'happy bunny' cos I now got a set for MX and a set for SM.

My local Berg dealer did say that if they were bent he wouldn't like to try straightening them.

Hi ady, There have been several sets of wp cheap on ebay recently..try doing a search and include 'worldwide' as they can often be found in germany quite cheap.....for some reason germans dont tend to put a reserve on items :? ...Also worth bearing in mind..ccms use the same wp forks but a lot of people don't know it so that can make em cheap, as no one bends ccm forks (not going quick enough)...good luck
Gix

p.s. was in clarkeys erm..shed, ( he didnt know I was routing)the other day....forks everywhere

Thanks Deaks & Gix
I didn't know the forks are the same as CCM's - and that they never get bent because they can't go fast enough.

£300 sounds a good price on ebay worldwide. Don't suppose Clarkey will be wanting to let any go at a bargain price though.

However I have some news...
..... It appears I was mistaken !
I was sure the forks were well bent ( at the cartridge end they were 2 inches out of line & at the fork spindle end about 4 inches & there looked to be a bend from the lower triple clamp )

But. When my pal came round and loosened the lower clamp holders and loosened the nut on the top triple clamp under the handlebars, as normal. To my amazement they straightened up lovely. I obviously couldn't do them myself due to my broken wrist and I obviously haven't ridden the bike to test them - but we know when there looking true !

So, i'm one happy bunny, albiet a little embarrassed for raising this post when it appears they were ok.
Sorry for wasting your time guy's I and 3 other mates genuinely thought they were truly bent.

No worries mate, and don't feel embarrased. I was convinced that mine were bent as well. They're tough fuc*ers them *********** forks, shame the seals aren't so tough.

Hope your wrist mends quick.

Cheers

Deaks

Thanks Deaks
Totally agree about the seals - mine both went after 16 hours on one nasty bump.
Got the Honda ones in now - working fine.
