Straight cut gears - How loud?

Im trying to find the source of a loud, high pitch whirring/squealing that seems to be coming from the clutch, its hard to describe but abit like a jet engine
At best it is hardly noticeable (at tick-over) but at worst it is ear piercing. It seems to be worst at about 1/4 revs when coasting into a corner - imagine coasting in gear at 4k rpm with the noise building but not too bad, by the time your down to 3k its rattling my ear drums, its almost gone a few seconds later
This is the same in any gear/speed

Ive replaced the starter sprague bearing, it seemed to be much better but after 5 minutes it was back?
I was convinced it was the sprague issue so I removed the starter gears altogether (freewheel gear and torque limiter) reassembled and again seemed much better but 5 minutes it was back as bad as ever
Clutching it reduces it slightly but not by much

What does that leave?
Spoke to DCR who says maybe its the clutch bearing (the one pressed into the case)
Could it be just a normality of the gearbox, and my oversensitive ears?

Im just about to take the clutch out again to put the starter gears back in, can anybody suggest anything to check before i close it back up?

Edit: It seems to be louder at the flywheel side now

what about the nut on the left side of the crankshaft...?

RE: Re: Straight cut gears - How loud?

How would i know if it was loose, just by tightening or would it be visible?

Im getting suspicious of the mains

Is this acceptable?

RE: Re: Straight cut gears - How loud?

you probably have a snapped crankshaft. my friend chris ginn from the next village races with me and he has an '04 450. his would wine and it turned out the crank had snapped. anyway, he rebuilt it and it did it again the next year at the same phuqin track would you believe!!!!

i have managed to get him to join here but never seen him use the site or post. code name "cranksnapper"! go into search above and put 'killer kenton' and author 'taffy'. second time he went nuts and told his regular dealer at mid west that the importer had better give him a VERY good price. he was seething!

i have heard of this once before on an '04 as well. the problem is the oilway in the big end pin. it starts 3mm wide and goes a long way through, however near the end it is down to 0.5mm to slow the oil down. alas though! the damage is done because the drilling lines up with the edge of the left web and the 3mm drilling starts the cracking and it spreads from there.

i'm a little suprised that DCR hasn't heard of this. PM'd you.

Well i thought id report back and let you know my findings

I'm glad to inform that the problem has gone, or rather the source of the noise has been found

A little embarrassing but it turned out the be the bash plate, This is a DCR one and it only secures with one bolt, meaning that it had worked slightly loose.
At certain rpm it would resonate against the frame and amplify the noise of the engine.

Man it was loud

Anyway the good news is the Berg is alive and well, its owner red faced and smiling! ::oops:

as my doris is fond of saying, KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid, it's always simpler in reality than in your imagination. Snapped crank, my arse

slim pickings tonight bud

My 04 450, has the same noise, and it is very loud now; I 've been reading all similar threads on this noise, and I am freaking out as I think it might be the problem Taffy is speaking about. The bike has never been opened since new, only replaced clutch and removed starter and water pump seal. The bike is down on power; but this is fine as I can't handle all the power anyway.

I have been hoping for a simple solution or answer (cheaper solution).

So bottom line is I need to open her up and check; problem is I can't afford to send it in and get it done, and I am nervous to do it my self. I would love to make her a 380, but again HUGE cash.

watch the oil drain bolt magnet .. this is the first sign of impending doom .

when they have done a few miles its best to lean them on a 50 degree angle and remove the drain bolt and inspect it after a ride , unless you change the oil after each ride .
