is the stock jetting for 06 fe450 the best? if not, any pilot, main, or needle sudgestions? thanks in advance.

Not knowing much about the 450, I wil just tell what others have done with theri 550's.

Seems like what has been working for most folks is just to increase the pilot jet size, 45 seems to be a good number for those keeping the stock DVT needle, and stock main jet.

What altitude do you ride at?

If you use the search engine on this page and type in 450 jetting and select the fuel forum you will see that there quite a few threads on jetting.

Seems like a few of the guys are running the 48 pilot though.

How about telling me where it is that you ride, what the temperature is now and during the dog days of summer, winter, and what the stock settings are on the carb and we'll go from there.

Just remember the cardinal rule about testing, whether it be fuel, suspension, etc... Change only one thing at a time and keep some basic notes so you can keep track of your progress, and then return to the settings you started with incase you get lost. Experience is great teacher;-).

I'd say stock is too lean for your altitude,IMHO. I ride at 8000-10000+feet and my 450 runs one up on the pilot, and one down on the main....runs purrrrrrfect!!!

From your 2006 owners manual:

Try this setting:
DVR needle 6th from the top.
40 pilot 2 turns out.

This is the "closed course" settings for your bike, compared to the stock settings this should make quite a difference. Especially in the 1/8th to 3/4 throttle range.

Many guys have run the DVT, and 45 pilot with good results. But if you run really tight trees with lots of elevation changes, ie climbing hill with tight trees which equals tons of engine heat, it does not work that well. It runs lean in the mid, and when restarting, the pilot is too rich and restart is diffifult. The 40 pilot and DVR needle works so much better, cooler, more power, all better.
