Still hard to restart after a fall on side!

My stepson and I had a great ride on fast rocky trails today and as usual the Berg did superbly, and I had no suspension issue after my weight drop. Actually, being in shape helps, go figure.

Anyway, I did had a nice wash, and found myself with my left leg stuck under the bike and before the stepson could come help pick up the bike, about a minute had passed.

I could not restart the darn bike, although I have a stator rewound by Sparks (by the way, the bike is doing a looot better), carb prepped by Lineaweaver (freshly cleaned up), new gas and new Denso plug. The crankcase vent is modded as shown in my gallery.

I had to get tow-started.

Soooo, what else should I check? The ignition?

On a side note, the bike is still a leaky mess but I have decided to just wash it and top it off between rides.

Thanks (by the way, I don't know if this is a mechanical or an electrical issue, so I stuck this in the mechanical forum).

Hi there. You could try to pull the decomp thingie and use the kickstarter for about 5-10 times or use the e-start about 5-10 revolutions, all this with full throttle. then release the lecky and throttle and start the bike up.

Believe me, I know that gymnastics, I have done that too. You do that to clean up the cylinder and dry the plug. So yes I've done that.

When we tow started it, it could hear it ignite and pop, but it took a few revs to finally get it going.

The e-start is useless, otherwise. I need a new motor and new battery.

I guess I have to stop falling.

Ha ha ha, so you already have the solution to your problem.
I WAS going to say fuel.
if it pops it has some kind of spark, it might be a float problem or the evacuation hoses on the carb. Or, moist or other trolls in your ignition.
I would start with checking the carb. both easier end less expensive.
What bike are you riding? I know it´s a Husa but what year?

I ride a 2001 FE501e, I should redo my sig.

It does restart eventually, but you have to really tow start or hill start, or kick it for a long time.

I doubt it is a carbie issue, as I said I just cleaned it. And the carburetor is really well jetted, on this bike, it is a really smooth ride when it runs.

But as soon as I fall on the side, it is a pain to restart.

Maybe I should try the hotstart mod.

Ok, then i would check the intake rubbers on both sides of the carb. Is your kickstarter mounted properly?
It MUST be one spline counterclockwise "too tight". To fold it in you have to pull it back a small amount.
But if that were the issue it would be hard to start every time.

It is not a carburetion issue, we have that dialed pretty fine. I also have the kickstart properly positioned. The bike starts in one kick, 2 at the most, unless it was of course worked on, or unless it fell and stayed on the side too long.

I might have to try the hot start mod some people have installed

I had the same problem. Did the quick fix. Set SEM (you have play as bolt in the case) so it would start easy. On my put a little before TDC on the fly wheel. it's not the best thing but it worked

Thanks, Husahoff, I will try that. The SEM has been rewound, therefore it has to be fine.

By placing it before TDC, you mean turning CCW when looking from the open end, or CW from the right side of the bike, when the stator cover is reinstalled?

Thanks

I pulled of the plastic plug to check. So mounted on the bike the SEM mark is CCW from the mark flywheel at TDC.

Forget looking at anything electrical unless you leave bits on the ground after the off.
How can it be electrical if it's running perfect before and after?
If it normally starts OK hot then IMHO you'd be wasting your time with any sort of hot start mod.
This sounds too simple but I would be looking at the carb breathers.
I had all sorts of weird stalling and hard start issues after going thru water.
Put a tee piece in at least 1 and run it up high and dry somewhere.
I went up under the seat but everyone has different theories on this.
Check out some of the threads.
Don't leave big loops that will collect fuel anywhere.
Just my 2 cents.

I will look into that as well. I am not going to leave anything aside, but it's been bugging me and frankly aggravates the hell out of everybody I ride with.

Sometimes a plug with normal combustion products built on the center insulator gets soaked up with fuel enough after a fall, that it takes a bit to dry it out. Either time or a tow or a new plug. Put in a new plug and if all is well , sleep well.

Can I just remove the plug and blow on it, as kick a few times without the plug? I guess it would dry it out pretty fast.

What about the hot start mod that some people do?

Would dry out faster if removed from the bike. I seem to never have a plug wrench in hand when a crash occurs. When kicking it make sure and push the kill button. Having no place for the spark to go can kil la CDI and if the cylinder is really fouled with fuel a fire can result. Things got real exciting for me on an old Husky when I was young and dumb.

I always carry a plug wrench but usually it is easier to get the buddy tow out of the fender bag, tie between the foot pegs and here ya go, or even use a Berger on top, then down the hill it goes, than unscrewing the plug, and drying it.

thats because you don't have a super easy plug wrench by the nbs (ned's bureau of standards).

Ned, you're the other option I forgot. This man can kick, I swear.

I cannot say anything about the plug wrench, I carry my own, it's certainly not as technologically advanced as yours.
