I purchased a 2000 FE400E from a guy in 2003 and have loved the bike, but notice that while the bike is under medium to high throttle settings, the throttle seems to bind. I can overcome it, but it makes for harder riding in technical areas where precise throttle control makes a difference. At first I though it might be a cable issue, but noticed that with the engine off there is no binding and the throttle rolls smoothly from full open to full closed. It feels almost like the increased intake pressure is causing the slide to stick in the carburetor. My question is: Is this normal and I just need to live with it? Is there a fix for this? Is there a problem?

Thanks

how can u tell if it's not sticking when the engine isnt running can u feel it actually on the throttle when it's running or not it might be the actual throttle try some grease or a drop of 3in1 where the cable goes into the throttle ude be better to take it apart to do this easy job process of elimination i think

the times i've re-routed a cable thinking i was clever only to find i have to put it how i found it.....

remember that a throttle slide is sucked closed by the engine. i wish i had a £1 for every time the throttle wouldn't close but i started a race (only coz i needed the sudden suprise!) and all was well....

look at the routing of the cable. look at the throttle housing rubbing against the brake lever mount etc, etc.

the throttle slide just shouldn't be binding.

hope this helps!

I have had this issue before as well. Cables not binding etc.. You could actually feel and hear the slide bottom on the stop. after taking the carb apart you could see that the slide was really worn. The cure for me was a slightly used carb off ebay.
I guess it is possible for them to just plain flat wear out.

Hey, berniebc..
I have had both types of problems, cable routing and worn slide. The cable problem was not real noticeable on opening, but sure did get my attention when it didn't close 8O . Sometimes just moving it an inch will release the bind.
If worst comes to worst and you need a new slide, try the gang at www.herdan.com in Port Clinton, Pennsylvania, phone # is 610-5623155, or you can go to the website, click on the Dellorto tag, and get in to the catalog. I get all my Dellorto parts from them, less expensive than Motorcyclecarbs.com, by 1/2 in some cases. If you call and get a lady, she is very knowledgeable and can really put together an order using description and model # for the carb. I get part #s from www.motorcycle carbs.com website if I have the time.

berniebc - I've noticed my Del is a bit sticky just as you pull it off the idle stop, particularly if the engine is spinning fast at the time. I put it down to high vacuum & limp wrist.

If yours is sticking at high settings I would not think vacuum would be an issue. Is it possible the slide spring is getting in a knot & binding the slide?

Are there any marks that might indicate a dented throttle slide housing near the top of the slide area ? My carb has "tap" marks on the side of the float bowl where someone has been trying to bring the bike to life. These "taps" could easily be dents in the wrong place. A previous TS250X had a hole broken out of the carb slide bore from what looked like the same. It went for years after repair.

hi, i had the same problem with my '97 bike. was only slight so didn't bother. i had a big dump one day however and got oil into the frame spine and then of course into the carb when i righted the bike, it smoked like buggery but the throttle was perfect! it's my opinion that these delorto carbs do suffer from wear.
