sticking in gear - again!

i have the latest gear selector fitted but somehow i'm stuck in gear all the time - why?

if i'm in second i have to pretend to want neutral by gently prising the lever back to 'N' and then trying for third. if i can somehow go 300 yards the vibration will allow a 'kick up' to the next gear.

so what's seizing?

Taffy, which part is new? I've seen the sliding plate that engages the shift drum pins become peened and then it will hang up on the shift shaft plate. Did the little return spring break?

Too true- seen 2 Bergs do it (02 FE 400 and 05 FE 550). My 650 has not yet done it.
My 04 300 EXC recently did exactly the same- filed burrs off shift plate claw tips and good as gold again.

That's right Aus, a flat file and your fixed. I had once borrowed a buddies XR 600 for another visiting buddy to ride. The hunny quit shifting as we returned from the ride. I split the cases looking for 'the culprit' and looked and looked but found no failed parts, only a very small particle of dirt or some @)&@%& thing lodged between the two plates and the pawl wouldn't catch the drum pins. Could have been an hour fix, but I had to dramatize in into a soap opera, 12 hrs long. Some ya win some......

i think that risky would agree - i don't have his problem. the lever isn't returning to it's normal position therefore allowing the hook claw to get around the next pin.

the lever is freezing at the top of it's stroke i would guess. i can find the answer but i was hoping it was going to be a no-brainer. never mind! :D

This tip is not exactly Husaberg specific, but I've seen this problem on other makes and it was caused by a burr or some damage in the junction between the shift drum and one of the shift forks. I think that with the side case off you'll be able to see the action a bit. :?

8) Oh, yeah, one more thing. My bike also does the described thingy, usually only when it's first being ridden and after it's freed up it goes away 'till next time. Taffy, I'll assume you're going to let us know what you find as soon as you tear it down. Later 8) I don't know what makes mine do it, just that it goes away and I'm really afraid to look. :?

The seal on my Husky got weak and allowed grit to work up the shaft and bind it where the shaft goes through the case. New seal and cleaning fixed it, but as you say, once you open it you'll know whats up.

Hi new to bergs & site
first things first just like to say wot a great site this is very helpful with lots of hints & tips and im sure full of characters.
As to gear change problems my own bike fe501 /03> just developed a gear change problem but only when changing up.
got it on the jack off the floor and tryed going through the gears by hand . I found that if i carefully taped the lever down after shifting up i could shift up again?
side case off clutch out . I found the machine screw and sleave that fits in the middle the return spring had worked very loose and was even slightly bent. replaced spot of locktight, rebuild good as new .But i think the moral is if it ain't right best take a look because if that screw had come out a bit further it would end up in the clutch! causing quite a bit of costly damage
even worst lost riding time lol

welcome Lplates to UHE and hope you enjoy it here. it's good to have another brit on the site...

yes i did pull it down and found EXACTLY what you did-that the central screw had worked loose and not only that but that the index cam had done the same (held by a 6mm screw) so i was so ashamed i said nothing

haven't tried it since. bet it has only partially cured it!
