Steering Head nut

Make sure you put some lock tite on your steering head nut....it will rattle off....mine did yesterday and my friends did it last year after a few rides.

RE: No carnage

as repeatedly said here at UHE, take your breather pipe from the tank around your bar once and then down through the nut and the steering stem. you can't lose the nut then.

you would also have to loop the bike 1.5 turns to get any overflow to go BACK in the tank so it's not an issue!

And anyone concerned with the oft quoted nonsense about washing the grease out of the head bearings with fuel, think about it. The breather is discharging into a hollow tube that is inside the bearings, it can't happen.

OH hey Taffy, lets update your old crate so you can get a new nut, that does not have a hole in it. :)

You can flip me the bird in Moab, cheers mate

I don't know why they changed to the nut with the big domed top on it for the steering head. It gets in the way if you want to do an under the bar steering damper, because the nut is so tall. The steering tube does not stick up that far through the top triple clamp, so they did not need to make the nut that tall.

First thing I did was take it off and cut the top part off the nut, so mine is now hollow again. Gave me just enough room to slide my damper in there, it is so tight that the link arm of the damper actually sits "in" the very top of the hollow steering tube. Looks like it was made that way!

Hi John, I had an 02 in my garage when I mounted my damper and I used it off the 02 so it would clear. Incidently, it was the same bike that Taffy suicude piloted at the last Moab ride.

Just so you know , the nut has no hole and the breather is about 3 inchs long on the new bikes

hi sethro

i bought a piecve of tube from a dealer and drilled the nut. i then put insulation tape around the pipe just enough times that it's a slide fit in the hole. i get the tank on and off all the time so it had to be quick and easy...

damn fry! i changed the nut now i don't need to change the bike....
