stator test

My 99 Husaberg FE501 has no spark, I have been searching the forums for infot buy I wonder if anyone can tell me how to test if the stator is working. I parked the bike and charged the batt, I left the charger on for a few days becuase I charger has a auto shutoff ( I least thats what it said) when I went to go riding I now have no spark? Can anyone help? ill continue to search in past forums. Also the bike had a new stator installed back in 3-19-05
 
Even if the charger has not shut off as expected and ruined the battery that will still not affect the spark. The spark and the 12V systems are completely seperate.

Have you checked Taff's doc for the stator check procedure? There is info there regarding useful tests.

Before you disconnect anything try unplugging the orange kill switch wire from the CDI/coil and see if you then have spark. It may be as simple as a faulty engine kill switch circuit.
 
give us some info about how you determined you have no spark. what does the ceramic insulator inside your plug look like? what color? how was it starting / running before it didn't. MORE INFO before you take it apart.

Excuse the punctuation in my first post, I was in a hurry. Thanks for the replies, anything helps. The bike ran good before I charged the battery, I think it was low from using the electric start, my bike seems to be harder to start with the electric start verses using the kick so I ended up draining the battery after a few days of riding. After charging the battery the bike would not fire. When I pulled the plug it looked black and dirty. I cleaned the plug with a wire brush and reinstalled the plug into the cap to check for spark by touching the plug to the engine head while turning the bike over and looking for spark. I had no spark. I looked at the wiring under the seat to make sure I didn’t disconnect anything when I charged the battery. I did find a helpful info on electrical system from this web site also I downloaded a few electrical Schematics and plan on doing some troubleshooting after work today with my meter. Any ideas?

Hello,

Disconnect the cable connection between the pigtail coming from the CDI box (under the frame tube over the top of the engine) and the pigtail coming from the ignition stator. Its tricky to do, I use a real small thin screw driver blade to release the lock tab .

Measure the Red to Black resistance on the Stator pigtail, it should be 3000 ohms +- 300 ohms. I use straightened out small paper clips to put into the pigtail sockets to make a good connection.

Measure the Green to Black resistance, it should be 260 ohms +- 26 ohms.

Switch your multimeter to ACV, and measure the Red-Black voltage while kicking the engine over. It should be 30-35 VAC, anything less than 25 VAC will not start.

Measure the Green - Black voltage while kicking the engine over. It should be about 3.0 VAC.

Unscrew the spark plug cap from the high tension wire and measure its resistance. It should be ~ 3500 ohms

Let us know the data.

I measured The red to black resistance on the Stator pigtail and could not get a reading, seemed to be an open

The green to Black resistance was 165.4 ohms

The Red to Black voltage while turnning the bike over was 19 VAC

The Green to Black voltage wile turnning the bike over was 3.1 VAC

The spark plug wire was 3100 ohms

Im guessing the open between the red and black wire on the stator pigtail means I have a bad stator

Yes, that plus the 19 VAC which should be 30-35 VAC.

Sorry, but you need a new stator!

first thing i would do is change the plug. a black plug generally can't be cleaned well enough to eliminate a shorted insulator. my kicking voltage is also 19vac. also is the reason you got an open on the red/ black because you were on the wrong range? it happens. try a new plug first.

I tryed all the different ranges on my meter when i measured the black to red wire, I did this with a digital meter. I will take your suggestion and buy a new plug and get the analog meter from work and take some more readings. Motoxotica quoted me $425 for a new stator, ouch! I would have to park the bike for a while. One things for sure, the Berg is sitting for the weekend on a planned camping trip today, bummer! I will get to it on on monday and post my results. Thanks!

somewhere at home i have all the readings i got when i had trouble earlier this year. the new stator i put in read 19vac. the one i replaced read 6vac. one thing that was hard for me to see was the spark (prob due to aging eyeballs), even after the new stator. kicking it in a very dark place made all the difference. actually the reason it quit was due to a deteriorating cam bearing. one of these days i may put in the old stator just to see if it is ok, but at 6v output probably not. but stranger things have happened.

That explains why yours will start at 19 VAC. Tje SEMs stator was the same part number from 89 through 98. Its windings for charging the CDI capacitor were very different from the 99-03 models. They are not interchangable electrically

Here is a thread where Oyk provides data on the 89-98 stator.

Its not apples for apples, since his data on voltage is taken loaded at idle, where as the 99-03 data is for unloaded stator at kick start speed, but the DC resistance readings are taken in the same manner for both types.

You can see the difference.
