Stator Resistance

Having got sick of the starting problems we are having, I ordered a new SEM as the static readings from the old one were 162 on the green/black and zero on the red/black. The new one however is not much different in that green/black is 165 and still ZERO on the red/black measured just after taking it out of the box. Where are you guys getting the 3 Kohm from? How are you measuring it? Is the new SEM a dud????

Hi Roy,

Red to Black should be 3000 Ohm +-300 Ohm., measured at the connector on the stator.

If yours is open, ie infinity Ohms, then your stator is probably DOA (dead on arrival).

You should install it however long enough to kick the engine over while measuring the Red to black AC voltage (preferably with a peak hold type of DVM). The voltage should be 35 VAC nominal, hopefully not less than 30 volts.., My Berg would not start at 24.9 VAC, when I used the e-start.with the spark plug removed.

At least one other member of this group has received a DOA stator.

Joe

Thanks Joe,

Discovered that the superduper Fluke MM that I have (fully auto) is not capable of reading 3 Kohm. Used a cheapy and it reads 2.81 so I guess I'm happy with that. The old stator reads 0. The voltage across the red/black is reading is just above 28VAC when flat out..I cant access a peak holding DMM just now...what do you reckon on the output?

It seems to start a little easier but still needs a fair amount of kicking (yes...I have followed he "hard start guide"!)
