Second, for those of you who are not so mechanically inclined and you own a 98 with an e-start (like me) and have never replaced a stator before, understand that if you try to follow the directions in the shop manual for stator replacement and timing you might get very confused. Or not, maybe i am just a melonhead
Just remember that instead of the stator and flywheel lining up in the 6:00 position, the 98 with an e-start is set up so that the stator and flywheel line up at about 9:00 just imagine taking the stator and flywheel in the photo from the shop manual and rotating it 90 degrees clockwise and that is how it goes back together.
Now that i look at it it seems so simple- but dang if you are intent on following the manual to a "T" you will get frustrated, at least in regards to the ingnition replacment. they really should have mentioned that the e-start bikes are set up differently. since the manual is mainly written for people who don't know quite what they are doing...
