Starving for fuel

I have a 98 FE600 elduro
I just cleaned my carby because the slider was sticking...

Now it is running great. Starts easy and pulls strong through the range..

Only one little problem..

It seems to ride good for a short distance then seems to die as if starved of fuel. let it sit and she will start up again. Ride really slowly and can ride for an hour or so. Gun it and she gives up real soon.

Now I am thinking fuel blockage. Is this something I should look for in the carby or am I better looking in the petcock etc. ?

mate (sorry, no idea what your name is)

might be running lean, might pay to go +1 on the plug number as well. mostly though i think that the fuel tank isn't getting air in as husaburgler says.

just thrash it and when it causes trouble again, just undo the cap with one hand whilst flat in sixth on a blind crest. be sure to look in the tank for a considerable period etc etc etc.

i think ya got the picture!

Actually I have no idea what is so funny but I am glad it is good for a laugh... And I am not even American.. Just humoristically challenged I guess..

Thanks again for the advice..

Hi Mark,

You might check the carburettor fuel filter. To get at it, remove the fuel line inlet from the carburettor, it is attached by one bolt.

Regards,

Joe

OK so again thanks to all..
And sorry for my poor understanding of humor. :D :D Surely one day i will understand..

I have gone through and cleaned the petcock and fuel cap breather, and all the fuel pipes..
I have checked the fuel filter and given it a cleanup.
I have not opened up the carb because as I said the bike has been running fine till it starves itself..

So I am not sure how the float level could affect that but maybe someone can explain that.

I have also cleaned out the fuel tank.
It is late here now so won't do any more this evening but will let is sit and try with fuel again on Saturday..

Thanks again all..

Mark,
Something else to consider:

If all the fuel is on the right hand side of the tank, it's quite possible the vacuum operated fuel pump is unable to keep up (pump gas fast enough to the left hand side) while under high throttle operation.

note This only applies to 1999 and earlier models with FE fuel tank.

This circumstance happened to me a couple of times with my previous 97 FE400.

Good luck!

Hi Mark,
Insure the float bowl vent tubes (small black lines on both sides of the Dellorto carburetor) have not been pinched closed. A kink in said lines and or an over tight zip-tye will do it. Such is quite easy to overlook during carburetor reinstallation.

Hope this helps you.

Kind Regards,
Dale

Make sure you don't have a pencil in your cylinder. Just kidding! Try disconnecting the fuel line, insert it into a PLASTIC jar, and turn on the fuel to see how much it flows. If it flows good you can likely look at tank venting or bowl venting problems. If it slows down or stops you can check petcock and gas cap. If that doesn't work, put a stick of dynamite in the tank and run like hell! Your worries will be over!

in the side of the carb, behind the banjo which recieves the fuel from the tank there is a little round disc filter. if you have a spare, take one and rip all the netting out (the filter) and try it like that for a ride.

if you have been using silly fuels it will melt the gauze into a fine mush and then no fuel will get through. classic mistake, course, never did it myself mind......ahem

Taffy.
I found the filter in the maual and removed the bolt that Joe mentioned. On my carb there was a metal gauze mesh therei. I thought that might the the filter but looking at the manual and from the descriptions that you and Joe have given this metal gauze doesn;t ft the description. Could it be that I am actually looking at the Banjo you mentioned? Please excuse my ignorance. I am kind of new to this,,,

Hi Mark, the gauze you found is what I was referring to.

If it looks clean then it is O.K. and not the problem.

Joe

if it is made of metal gauze then it won't have melted will it! but if that screen is plastic is in the eighties well it can melt into a screen that can't be penetrated.

hope the fuels are good and that it's made of metal as you say.

Hi Marky
This is a funny little world. I just realised that you are the previous owner of my FE 600 and I’m not sure if you visit this site anymore since you sold your bike. Well I hope you get another Husaberg as they are awesome peace of kit.

The starving problem was not solved when I got the bike. The problem was that someone had lowered the floats in the carburettor so it would not leak fuel around the fuel bowl. I got Delorto carb kit from our friend at Motorcycle city and replaced all the consumables in the carburettor, adjusted the floats to correct height.
I also reduced PJ and MJ to 35 and 190 and back popping has gone to. And now the bike is running as strong as ever. What a power machine.

I would post some pics but I’m not sure how to?

Best regards
Thor
