Starting Workaround

Hi,

Just bought my first Husaberg, a 400 (2001). I am having what sounds like a common problem starting the bike and am slowly working through the hard starting guide. My bike does not start at all on the button and is very hit and miss on the kick start. By accident I hit the electric start while I was kicking and hey presto, it fired straight up! What I want to know is if I am likely to cause any damage by pressing the electric start at the same time as kicking to start the bike while I figure out the cause of my particular starting problem ????

Thanks in advance for any advice......

Read through below link / down load for starting help. You probably did not do any damage when you hit the button by accident while kicking it.

Like most modern 4 strokes these bikes are finicky and wants to be started in exactly one way and nothing else will do. When I got my bike 6 years ago I had a hell of a time, after the learning process I got it down pretty quick and now it fires right up most of the time unless it has been sitting a really long time with the button or kick starting it.

Make sure the valves are adjusted and you got fresh gas. The Dellorto carb is also real sensitive and small adjustments make a big difference. If you have access to the old owner, call him and ask him about starting the bike. If not maybe you live close to someone on the forum that can show you the ropes as well.

Good luck,

Hakan

Proper valve adjustment is key, as well as proper jetting with your carb. I've had my 03 400 for about 6 months now and have finally got the bike to start 1-2 kicks cold every time. It takes some patience to learn your particular bike. The starting technique I use is: when cold, choke on, pull in manual de-comp and open throttle half way, then kick the bike over smoothly 4-5 times. I then release the de-comp, close throttle and find TDC. I nudge the motor just past TDC and let the kicker return to the top. Then one good full kick and it fires. Good luck with yours!
