Starting problem Husaberg 650 2002

Hi!

I have some problems starting my 650, both warm and cold engine. I'm sure it's 'user fault' on my part as well. However, no matter how i maneuver the decomp, it won't start on either kick or electric motor. I have to run it downhill to start it, and then it seems to run just perfect.. Too bad i can't stop anywhere without a downhill..

So, how do you folks deal with starting issues on these bikes?

Any idea on what I should do?

I'd love for the electric starter to crank a bit faster, but it seems a bit underpowered as well(?) :?
Pulse spark plugs?
Bigger capacity battery?
Bigger leads from battery to starter?
Mods to starter motor?
Or is the kick with correct decomp the best way?
Thanks for any response at all :D

tecnique is important, you really need to practise this one, there is a definate art. As Husabutt said, read his link and practise. Set your valve clearances. My berg was hard to start at first and I messed about with all sorts but it was getting the valves spot on which worked. Admittedly the leccy boot still aint got what it takes but when it starts 1st kick it's no bother.

welcome back. the first question i would ask is: if you kick the engine over easily, does it come to a sudden stop and then require a lot of pressure to overcome. if so, the auto decomp on the cam is prolly shot (most likely) or your exhaust valves are too loose. it should kick thru compression with only a bit of resistance.
like husabutt says, read thru the hard start guide. if properly jetted, and the right technic, they are easy to start. 8)

check that the mixture screw has not vibrated out making it too rich. Find out where it is now and then wind it in and then out to only 1.25 to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks a lot guys! Great feedback! :D

I had the bike in at work today (i'm a car mechanic..) And turns out it gathers a bit of grut between the spark plug and the plug insulator, where it might be loosing some of the spark to earth before the plug electrode.. A bit of cleaning, fully charged battery and the technique of running the electric starter followed by a ligth kick does the job!! :) It starts. Remains to see if it's reliable to start every time..:S

Also, Ned, I think you're rigth about the auto-decomp. Its heavy on the kick, always, and very choppy down stroke, like an older bike without decomp. But manual decomp seems OK, so until it's not starting again, i'll leave it there for now.. 'Project R6 starter' probably begins in a couple of months as the winter sets, and the bike season ends where i live..;)

Thanks for the link, brilliant. Mixture screw is noted as well!

Thanks a lot everyone! :)

actually, haakaberg, they're easier to start on the kicker with a bad autodecomp because you always know where tdc is located

My 2001 650 was really hard to start until i had my stator rewound by sparks. now it starts with a few kicks cold, and usually one when warm.
