Sorry, upgrading the starter motor alone will not change this issue...

ok thanks . so what will i have to do to resolve this . is there a kit i can fit ect

1) Ignore everything Le Kermit says.

2) Confirm that you have the late model YTZ7S battery.

3) Ignore everything Le Kermit says.

4) Order and install the 2004 and later FE650 starter (PN 820.40.001.000) and starter mount (PN 820.40.002.000)

5) Ignore everything Le Kermit says.

6) Push the button and ride.

Yes, he can change the starter motor and no, he does not have to buy a brand new one, he can also get the equivalent on eBay from a parter. The motors from the CBR600 usually fit.

They are Mitsuba SM-14, you need to make sure that the motor bracket is the right one (the two holes come "flush" with the knob in the back, not with the body of the motor, if you look you will understand).

You can get a used but in great shape starter motor for about $10 to $20 if you know what to look for.

Yes, he does have to change the bracket. The bracket costs around $45 and Dan @ Motoxotica usually has one in his inventory.

No, it will not be enough to start the bike cold on the button. It's an 03. It may help sometimes, after all I can start my 2001 501 cold on the button sometimes, usually in the summer, and when the engine ran less than 24 hours ago, but that's not a given.

Powercell, I am ok with you ignoring my posts, not a biggie.

Have a great day.

Le Kermit, do you own a 650? Have you updated an older 650 to the newer starter? Hmmm???

Well, I do and I have. Both my 2001 and my 2002 FE650e's have received this starter upgrade and they both start right off the button... everytime. They typically did not prior to the upgrade. My 2004 FE650e also starts right off the button without exception - even in the cooold winters. That makes 3...

Share your knowledge, but if you don't 100% know the answer, it's best if you keep it to yourself.

:D powercell i was'nt going to come out of the closet to say that

i to have a 950R on order as well!

I'm sorry Rick... I think the pressure of waiting for the new 950R is starting to get to me... :coffee:

Hi guys :)

In my new zen like state, and wishing to share my new found peace with the rest of you, may I suggest that any discussions relating to personal grievances be taken care of via PM's? That way, we're not hijacking threads.

Please don't view this as an admonishment. I've done much worse(and recently!) than this, but in my quest for calm seas, I'm trying to turn over a collective new leaf.

Also, it's the holiday season... Santa cries every time you make fun of a frenchie ;)

aaaaahhhhhhmmmmm,

Spudds:

1.Did you purchase the bike new?

2.Has the starting problem got progressively worse?

3.Did it ever start "on the button"

I did not report the ignition upgrade from SEM to Kokusan on 01-03 Bergs as an invention of mine but as a fact that Dale gave me over the phone just 10 minutes before, because after asking a couple people including you about it, I ended up asking the right person who knew what he was talking about.

Upgrading the starter motor will not turn a hard starting 501 into one that starts cold on the button, but we have to believe you when you say that it will the 650? Ok, let him try and maybe it will work. He's got the part numbers and I also pointed a starter on eBay for him to bid $10 on instead of spending $100 on the OEM part. I'd rather have him spend $50 than $150 if it does not work.

Now if you're frustrated for some kind of personal issues why don't you take care of them directly instead of venting here?

If you've got a beef against me, then keep it private, you've got the PM button.

Hey LeFrog -

You say that the newer/larger/stronger starter motor will not fix your 501's hard starting problem... did you try this? Tell us about your experience and maybe we can learn a little somethin' from ya'...
