Hi Sparkx,

The 04's went to Kokosan ignition and Kiehen carb, on the 03 the two things to check if mechanically sound is the SEM stator and the needle and atomiser in the Dellorto carb.

Saprks.

ok so would you not rule out an o3 model or go for an 04 cash is limited to around £1500-£2000?chamber 66 does it start from cold on the button or only when warm? and are they a bugger to kick off if you dont know how?

they are a bugger to kick start. thats why he's selling it and thats why a rare and exotic bike is going cheap!

so having cleared that up we then have to tell you that when you get it home you need to

set the tappets
change to an iridium plug from NGK or denso
change the fuel
blow out the carb - change the needle and atomiser

if you are running but still want it to be even better you need to
check the real TDC and then use a strobe to set the ignition again correctly
get a later decomp and spring

if getting esesperate

we don't know you!

Taffy

that was a joke - right?

My bike is an 02/03 400 it starts from cold first /second kick or off the button no problem. it has always been like this since i bought it, so my instincts are if you set it up right it should not be a problem. In the year since i have had it the only things to go wrong with it are a rattle i can not find so have given up trying  and the usual bearings etc , that all enduro bikes need replacing. in all i have been happy with my bike and would certainly by another. My message is don't be put off by what people tell you they aren't as bad as people make out.

My trick to getting my 02 fx470 started is to do all the things listed above and Keep it tuned. I don't use the E/restarter I just kick it starts like a normal bike. Sorry no Voodoo tricks .Download the owners and hard start doc's to see what your getting in to.

Hi Sparkx - re the bike on Ebay... it was my bike - which I listed after a bad night of almost breaking my foot getting it going! But thanks to some sound advice (partly through ebay and also here) I had a lot more luck this weekend and I took it off ebay... here's to a summer of fun!

When I bought my 650 everyone told me that I needed to learn how to kick start the bike. But when I tried to do that I could not turn it over. So I worked at it every day. And at the same time I got professional help with my jetting. Now I kick start the bike everywhere but in the tightest of situations. Like stuck in a deep rut on a hill side. Then I use the E button.

The best trick that I know of is in the manual. Get the bike on its compression stroke. Then with the kick start lever engaged at the top of its stroke. Give the bike one good long hard kick. It works for me.

Yes, these kick like a dream. Mine lost 12 easy pounds by removing the e-starter and battery. WOOHOOO. aproaching 200 hours and 4000 miles!!! so far, loving it!

so u guys reckon only the older models are hard to start? because i own a 2008 650 and I havent been able to start it when cold. when the bike is hot or still a little bit warm, thats a different story. starts with the first kick. but when it's cold... no chance. but it could also be me i guess. :)

schlingsi you have the wrong set up in carb or ? I personally hand start all new bikes

for my customer's just to show that it starts without having tree trunk's for legs.

If you care to give us a call we like to help!

On cold starts I was told to pump some gas into the carb. So I roll it over a few times with the compression lever pulled and the gas on. Then I hit it hard and if fires right up.

But take Rick up on his offer. Step 1 is to get the jetting right. With out that your dead in the water.

Had my bike serviced a few days ago... Told them I cant kick start the bike when its cold. They have 'tuned' her little bit and now she starts first kick. Wonderful!

I just have to roll it over once, kick it not even that hard and it fires up straight away. much much better.

hi, just thought i'd add to the list of replies... i have an '03 501FE and ever since i have owned it i have found it very easy to start! the only time it didn't start was when there was a problem, in my case the stator packed up! i can leave my bike for 2 weeks and then (even with slippers on) kick it over and it'll start either 1st or 2nd time! i never use the electric starter, or restarter as it's known as it's never got enough guts to get it going! i will get round to taking it off one day that's how pointless it is! back to my point though, if there is nothing wrong with the bike it should be easy to start! it's always a bit dodgy buying a bike with a fault as it always seems to end up being far more in depth than you might first think! hope that helps!!

hi ben

some good points there but surely after arkley has told you that it starts on the button, you should be asking yourself; "i want that too!"

arkley is doing it on his original starter motor and a YTZ7s that isn't yuasa but someone else so i think i'd want more if i were you.

regards

Taffy

I've never kicked my bike over in over a year now. Maybe I'll kick start it someday just for the heck of it. I ride every single week out somewhere and the button always works, no problem. When cold, 2 quik flips of the throttle, then the button, Bam! When hot, 1 quik little flip, then the button, Bam! Fires up. Yes, the batteries are good on these 05s.

You're right bout that fella...(but not if you take an hour - go purple & start to cry) ...but anyway, I've always felt that I needed to be able to kick start my bike and the e-start was a bonus for when i felt really lazy / or backup.

Thanks to the Taffy mods, I now have both & use both....no worries ...no concerns...grinning ear to ear.
