hi all does anyone know.if i remove the startermotor from my bike to reduce weight.apart from a blank to putover the hole is thier more to do. :( :( :(

Mine has been gone for a year now, and I don't miss it. You should pull the clutch cover off and remove the other gears as well. Saves about three more pounds. I also made up a couple of metal dowels to hold the bearings in place but I think it is probably overkill. The battery and any attached wiring can go as well. Motoxotica Dan rode my 2005 550 last weekend and said it felt lighter than his new 250 Husky! 8O Do a search for previous posts and you should find all the info you need.

I just did this. I am waiting till I need to go in the clutch cover(wp seal  ) to remove the starter gears. Do a forum search, someone posted a way to make dummy shafts cheaply to retain the starter gear needle bearings. The starter plug is reatained by a bolt, see the parts maual for the parts you need. I bought one plug and three bolts(two different) and two copper sealing washers, totaling $20-$25. Good luck!

do you need to remove the gears that are left if you dont want to !.

No need to remove the gears , but if you are removing the s/m to save weight then i suppose pulling the gears out is req. FWIW i would sooner keep the button start , as the only time i got to overtake racing was when i could stab that button and get my bike fired up while some poor sod was busy building up a left leg muscle

thanx.

on my 03fe400 the e-start is usless. it's13lbs of dead wait! but i want the lights to work so i'm still trying to find some type of battery or capacitor. my lights don't work right with a load or voltage storage. i didn't remove any gears, just in case i sell the bike and the new owner wants the e-start. the e-start does work when the battery is brand new...but that only lasts about 1 month.
