starter slip

I've got starter slip on my 550 when you press the start button, I thought it was the sprag clutch that was on it's last legs until the post about the torque limiter is there any way of knowing which is at fault without pulling it all apart.

If you catch it right it will turn over and start the engine but when it slips it a fairly high screching grating noise I know this is a bit vague but I can't think of any other words to describe it. No doubt it will be the most expencive bit that requires replacing that's the way my luck seems to be going at the moment.

Does it do it all the time? Or just Cold or hot? It is IMHO most likely the starter sprague.

i thought they had it sorted by the time your model year came around?

is it better when warm?
does it go through the turning and then make the noise?

it isn't a huge effort to take the sideecover off and have a look. if you're like me, you want to get into the engina bit at a time and this would be a good intro into the left cover wouldn't it?

When I hit the start buttom hot or cold it will screech, I have to have three or four stabs ar the start button before it will grab and start the engine B dung B dung B dung four or five times and fires up.
I have a clutch tool and the gear locking tool in the mail from DCR's so I could be wheelding spanners by the weekend.
I'll let you know the out come.

Does sound like your spague, Steve
If it works better with an oil change and a warm engine it would suggest that.

Hi Ady,

I think you may be right, to begin with it would hardly turn the engine at all but since the oil has been changed a couple of times it has got better, so when the bits turn up from DCR's we'll have a luck.

maybe steve someone was really lazy and used the starter for everything and then PX'ed the bike. if this is the problem then it's your bargain bike when this small problem is sorted.

at least that's how i'd look at it.

Hi Taffy,

Alex did say he was a lazy B*****d never used the kick start so there you go, it makes good tinkering.
About 35 quid for the sprague clutch not to bad.

Sparks.
