Starter Relay?

Hey guys, the day after I got my bike the e-starter stopped working (really annoying as this was the main reason I got rid of my XR to get e start) took it back to the shop the next day and they said it was a loose wire in the connector on the relay. It played up a couple of times and I could just wiggle the wires to get it running. However now it's stopped working again and I'm thinking the relay is possibly toast. Just pulled off the seat and tank and hit every plug on the bike with contact cleaner and CRC 2.26 to help waterproof it and was hoping to clean up a connection and have the button working but nope nothing. I can jump a wire from the battery to the starter and it will crank. And I cannot hear the relay clicking. It's not really a complicated system and my multimeter is dead so the only thing I can come up with is the relay has given in. Anyone got any other ideas before I spend $53 on a new relay?

The bike is an Aus delivered 08 FE650.

Hi mate

My neighbour had the same prob with his 06 ktm 525 was the starter relay coil breaking down, replace it and it will be fine

I just bought a 2005 FE 550e. The seller said he had checked it out and the relay was bad. He had ordered a new one and it was at the dealership. I went and bought the new relay and installed it but it still wouldn't crank. It is wired with the lead to the starter and another lead from the battery to the other high amp side of the relay. 12 volts is coming to the relay from the starter, the 12 volts then comes through the fuse to the two front low amp connectors and when the start button is pressed it sends 12 volts to the two back low amp connectors. It seems to me that should cause the relay to close and crank the starter but nothing happens. I can jump a wire across the two terminals, the one from the battery to the other going to the starter and it starts right up. Maybe the new relay is bad but what are the chances of that? There is a black wire (low amp) coming into the relay, I don't know what it is or where it goes but it doesn't seem to do anything where ever I put it. Does anyone have some ideas?

Try the plug that goes into relay mine where the wires going in plug (white connector) had pulled out a little bit so it would not start. They just can not connect with relay jus need a bit of movement from rear of plug forward.

Thanks for your replies. I found a wire broke up by the headlight, the black wire. I went and looked at my neighbors bike to be sure where it went and hooked it up. It works great now. What a nice bike! Thanks again for replying to this post.
