Oh and I changed from Motul Synthetic to Castrol RX Super which, depending on who you listen to is probably the wrong thing to do. Now done 75hrs on the RX, all seems good and I have no plans to do a strip down yet.... If it aint broken dont fix it.

21 is the torque limiter, goes between the starter and the sprag clutch. Used to be solid but this caused a bunch of damaged clutch baskets. It prevents excessive torque from being transmitted through the starter system and damaging gears. The KTMs have used a similar device since 2006 as they were tearing teeth off the intermediate starter gear.

I see. In the 2001 version, it is just a plain solid gear, has no inner mechanical parts whatsoever. I guess you would call that another possible upgrade.

oops sorry  , you are right Craigy. A product of old age and poor eyesight on my part... I had my glasses on too, go figure.
The torque limiter went bad on mine, I only realised after killing a clutch basket and on another occasion the sprague gear, $$$ lesson learned !!

Sorry for not following this recently - got distracted....

21 - hard to tell from the exploded view but I gather this is more than just a simple gear, and is infact an assembly.

On mine at above 15C it starts like a champ - but as soon as the temps drop below 15C it free wheels all the time and won't even turn over reliably with the manual decomp in. I know the decomp is working because kicking it easy with it pulled in.

I think I am off to get a new backwheel torque limiter thingy - on warranty if I can

Cheers

Mark

nb: I think I will drop to a 15-40 wt oil and see if that helps
