G'day Men, as we know the starter motors in our beasts are piss weak to say the least. Has any one ever tried rewinding one with heavier wire to get some more oomph out of it or are the magnets the limiting factor here, cheers Matt

Not sure about rewiring Matt but the windings and rotor area of the R6 starters used as an upgrade are a fair bit longer than the standard motor.
Im sure i've it mentioned here somewhere, have a look in the docs or try the search option.

Thats what everyone keeps saying but I never have a problem with cold starting my 650

I press the Button 'KAHJA KAHJA KAH-VROOM'

What year bike and model do you have ?

RE: Re: starter motors

FWIW, on my '03 I replaced the OEM starter with an R6 starter. Once the bike is warm, it will start on the button with no problems at all.

RE: Re: starter motors

I have a 'Beefy starter motor'+CTZ7S battery from Taffy. It should be better, but my bike does not start from E-start. I does not rotate quickly enough to get a spark or something.
I have a sparks rewounded SEM stator, and it starts always in 2 kicks from the kickstarter.
Really weird, because this beefy setup should be better (I have this problem and Belgique ******* too, both same setup)
Wil look into this when i have my clutch fixed

RE: Re: starter motors

R6 starter, CTZ7S battery, updated de-comp as per Docs and my 02 650 starts off the button hot or cold now.

My auto decomp is updated too.

Does the engine actually turn over or does the starter freewheel spin over instead?
I had to shim my starter freewheel to get it to turn the engine over properly.

Stater does turn the engine around but no start..

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: starter motors

Might be worth checking at what torque setting the freewheel slips as per the owners docs, mine would turn the engine over but not fast enough. I was about to give up and remove starter and battery to save weight, i shimmed the freewheel as a last resort and it worked.
Good luck ; )

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: starter motors

I have had trouble starting with the button particularly when cold and the oil is thick for the the last couple of years. I have adjusted my valves using the 1/8 turn method and bingo ! It's now like a different bike to start. Obviously what I thought was the correct valve clearance using feeler gauge's was not !!!! Even being slightly loose with excess clearance doesn't let the auto decomp do it's job properly and hence to much compression for the starter to cope with. The battery used to go flat very quickly with the extra compression stress, but now all good. The 1/8 or 1/6 turn method is so simple and effective.
Cheers. :D
