Could be a worn sprague clutch assembly. They are known to wear out especially if e-starting the bike with a cold motor.

where are you from in the uk?

your problem IS the sprague bearing no ifs about it. get a new one and it'll be ok for a while. you can make it last longer by running regular multigrade oil (it hates synthetic) and also start it from cold with the foot.

if you've a lot of questions why don't you look at the document at the foot of my post we call the 'info sheet'. it has a lot in it.

BTW folks it is being updated and all hyperlinks will work soon as i now have the help of faktor.

cheers

yes it's easy to change. drop the water, pull waterpump apart, gearlever off, sidecover off.

one thing to watch. make absolutely sure the the two dots and the one dot of the two gears line up and DRAW THEM ON PAPER FIRST. be accurate.

then it's clutch off and change the sprague bearing. given that you're delicate with the sidecover gasket and all the rest you need only change the bearing and top up with coolant.

SO WHERE YOU FROM?????

hi taffy sorry about the delay from bournemouth well wimbourne near the countryside

Isn't the bike in question a pre2001? If so, the sprague clutch is part of the balancer shaft across the front of the crankshaft. You gotta out the engine & split the cases to get the sprague clutch out.

Before that, pull the 3-bolt cover off the RHS of the engine & slip out the intermediate gear for the starter. Check the teeth on the gear & starter shaft. My '98 had the bore where the starter fits into the engine so worn that the gears could possibly come out of mesh & strip. A combination of dirt off the front wheel & engine vibration wears the starter & its bore.

Most likely, the sprague is slipping as said above. Some have reported trying different oil helps the problem, but I wouldn't swear by it.

:( p.s. BUNDY BEAR the bike in question is a 01, & know the cases do not have to be split like on a 2000 & older! :D might also check the breakaway torque on torquelimiter 7psi or less it will slip, hold limiter by outside teeth in vice & check. :D
