Isn't the bike in question a pre2001? If so, the sprague clutch is part of the balancer shaft across the front of the crankshaft. You gotta out the engine & split the cases to get the sprague clutch out.
Before that, pull the 3-bolt cover off the RHS of the engine & slip out the intermediate gear for the starter. Check the teeth on the gear & starter shaft. My '98 had the bore where the starter fits into the engine so worn that the gears could possibly come out of mesh & strip. A combination of dirt off the front wheel & engine vibration wears the starter & its bore.
Most likely, the sprague is slipping as said above. Some have reported trying different oil helps the problem, but I wouldn't swear by it.
