Gday All,

im a newbie to this forum, But a lover of the Berg like the rest of you so go easy on me!

I recently bought a 07 FE650 that had done 1300 Kilometers.

Since iv owned it, the starter seems to spin but not engage gears.
i had an 03 501E befor and it had the same problem after about 3 years.
Yes, i do use the magik button when its cold but i figure if it took 3 years on the 03 to wear something out then its worth it!
is this normal for a near new bike or should i get it looked at because its very annoying..

thanks in advance

The later bikes have a slip clutch as well as the usual sprague. If you are lucky the it might be the slip clutch might need work. Ont the post 2001 engines the sprague is pretty easy to get out behind the left side engine cover. Hopefully others have experience with it.

There are a couple of bush-mechanic fixes for both.
You can test the torque limiter with a tension wrench and if it's slipping it can be shimmed.
The sprague bearing spring can be shortened for more tension if that's the culprit.
I've actually cut down my sprague spring but some guys here have used fork springs as replacements.
Do a search on sprague in the forums for more info.
