Starter clutch failure

At 49 hours/ 1279 miles My 550 had a failure of the starter clutch. Broke two teeth off the starter sprague inner that meets the clutch outer basket. One tooth fell to the bottom and the other jambed in the clutch teeth. Locked the motor on the clutch side. I dont use the starter to climb up stuff like my buddy does on his KTM so I am sure it is not starter abuse. Maybe the slight noise I heard about 10 hopurs ago was the starter clutch starting to drag. HMMMM :?:

The bike is now at the dealer and they are researching how the warranty works and what will be covered. The warranty is NOT from Husaberg or KTM but from some out of house insurance company. I hope I dont have to bendover and take one for the team! I have a good dealer and will have to hope for the best. Am I to be the first to use the 1 year warranty.

Also the bike started using oil in the pase 15 hours. It is now at approx. 150 ml per 125 miles. Not leaking or blowing out the breather so it must be burning it. The pipe is also black and sooty.
the only other thing wrong with the bike is the tripmeter reset for negative broke.

You can hear of the tale of the broken bike in the other thread about what I did on my summer vacation :D

You didn't say what year bike your 550 is although I can assume it is a 2005 or 2006 from the warranty. Dan of MotoXotica replaced my starter gear when I had maybe five hours on it. He said that it was a standard factory warranty fix because some gears on some 2005 bikes had failed. I've got just over 27 hours on mine with no oil loss yet.

Yep, it is burning oil. I could smell the slight tinge of burnt oil, when riding behind bob. It is a three stroke! lol.

:( Sorry to hear about your starter clutch woes bobzilla. This is the first such failure I've heard about regarding the 04' and newer bikes. I hope the warranty folks treat you right. As for taking one for the team, could it be that you are the chosen one? 8O

Hope I'm not the one but like I said I have a good dealer so I am hoping.

Cant cry too much right now since it is so hot here and i have a new toy to play with..........2006 BMW Dakar....... next year its

NORTH TO ALASKA for 5 weeks

Does this mean that i will see you at one of the alternate pits?

pit twelve through sixteen are alternate & not to far from fallon?

Hey bob I will make it worth your time!!!!!!!!!! p.s I have the parts in stock

in case warranty can't help BOSS can!!

Got my bike back today :D

The dealer replaced starter clutch , idiler, clutch basket and assorted bearings and gaskets. Replaced the spedo that had lost the ability to count DOWN on the trip meter and told me that some oil loss is normal for the big bore. Worst on the si fiddy and less on the fi fiddy and even less on the fo fiddy.

Starts first kick and on the button :D

It took two months to have the repair done but I brought in the bike broke and took it home all fixed and ZERO $$$$ out of my pocket. One telling point I may make about the reliability of the brand.... I dont think THIS dealer or the Husa USA division has much experience with the warranty process. That is a good thing for all of you with the new bergs but a bit of a learning curve for the very few that have had to deal with a failure.

Thanks to the boys at NMS and to Brett for your help!!

Over all I am a HUSAHAPPY dude again............ Now if I just had a big tank

My '05 55o uses a bit of oil also. Not enough to be concerned, but enough to keep a close eye on considering the overall capacity.
