Starter and Battery Removal Q

I'm going to pull the battery and starter on my 08 FE 450. I've been through a couple batteries on the thing already and between my fan and GPS I rarely get through a day without having to kickin it to life. I'm to the point I don't use the starter anymore to save the battery for the freakin fan that never shuts off and my GPS. I've gotten pretty used to kick starting the FE and this is the first bike I've owned with the magic button anyway so I won't miss it.

I got a couple of questions:

1. Is it necessary to pull the idler and freewheel?

2. I don't use the light kit, can I run the fan off it's circuit? It gets HOT here and I ride mostly single track. (The GPS can live on its double AA's) It would be nice to keep the fan functional while the bike is running.

don't need to pull the internal starter stuff, i think its about 200gm less spining stuff if you do.

I got some questions about the fan too, does the fan kit use a relay ? or is the temp switch beefy enough to handle the current. I got a fan and a temp switch but dunno howsists really supposed to be wired in.

if you remove the battery you're supposed to put a capacitor in to keep the regulator happy. the fan won't run on the light ciurcuits on my bike.

Bundy bear and smorgy know all about this stuff I think :D
 
The weight savings of the battery and starter motor are significant. I don't need to squeak out every gram. Besides I feel like they're just baggage most of the time. Maybe I have a current drain somewhere or just a bad run of batteries.??

Assuming your wiring harness is the same as mine (and it should be) there is a connector for the fan built in. The only relayed circuit is the lighting.

How are you certain the fan won't run on the lighting circuit? It should run if the bike is on, No? It certainly provides enough juice.
 
The lighting circuit is AC so without rectification it won't run a DC fan motor. Alternate stators are available, or you can 'float' your own. Info is available as a download

There is no relay on the fan, its switched by the temp switch. The standard wiring harness is ready to go, just plug it in and you're on the way to a flat battery on a hot day.

I came up with a rectifier and a 4 pole switch that I was going to fit to control whether its status quo, or the lighting coil powers the fan. Not fitted yet, ended up fitting the higher temp fan switch and as I didn't ride last summer due to injury I've not has a flat battery since.

I suspect that I'll eventually get around to doing the stator for a proper fix. I like stable temps, and buttons. Good thing its my right leg that's bung.

Indeed you would need to covert but it should work. Thanks for the links. My fan has been running a lot now that we're well into summer so maybe that's the deal. Thanks for the link BTW...

That's what I was saying on the wiring harness... everything is live all the time except the lighting circuit. It would be nice to at least relay the fan and GPS so they only work when the bike is on.

I need to break out the wiring diagram some more I guess. So the fan just runs off the battery whether the bike running or not?

no worries hey look its in the DOC 8O

taffy made dummy shafts for the internals I guess to make sure the lil roller bearings didn't fall out

I used silicone.
