i have a 2003 fe 650 . is it bad to use the decompressor when using the electric start , one mechanic said its ok an another says not good? could anyone give more sugestion!! i have broken teeth off the staring gear for some reason it happened twice? thanks

I got an 04 650 which i been doin it too since nu as sometimes starter wont crank the engine. I thort it a shady battery (bike was nu but old stock)but as it turns out, somebody here hoo seems too know bergs reckons there was a bad batch of starters around 03-04. Gotta be carefull where you read on this site.... just been reading the red alerts. Glad i didnt read it before i bort my bike. Anyways, the damage that may occur for useing decompresssor whilst starting is maybe a dirty valve seat. No chance of contact with piston if decomp adjusted correct.

I have done it on every pre 09 Huaberg I have owned with no ill affect. I believe it helps cut down on the wear and tear of the starter sprag.

casper, where you from? there is a lot to getting them to start. almost wears you down but the important thing to remember is that the bike, when done, is a superb bit of kit and is good foe ever.

bergbro, your auto decomp spring has probably given up. you need to pull the rocker cover off and check it for 'ping'.

Taffy. Only light pressure on spring. wouldnt call its action "ping" so much as flacid. should i wind another round on the spring? Usaully started ok hot but started quite crisply when i put a new battery in it a few weeks ago. I generaly used the decomp out of mechanical sympathy and habit rather than necessity too I guess (also ensured it would start every time when in company of other brands). The decompressor unit has been out so it may well be incorrectly tensioned. thanks for that Bro. I best do some investigating.

Bushie. Being that I'm a sparky i have been Known to use twisted copper with good effect. But that was on jappa's . I didn't want to risk breaking a casting by jamming the gears. First timer into the depths of a euro motor. Done dozens and dozens of all sorts of bikes, cars, tractors, trucks, small motors etc. they all have there idiosyncrasies, just a matter of learning there style. And if I break this one then im not allowed to buy another one (new)(apparently).

yep hold the decomp under the cam and it should come up smooth and steady and tap the centre of the cam.

Yer Taffy bro. you da man. action was ok but some knob (me unfortunatly) put the sprocket back on 180 deg out. Thats now been sorted. I spose I should remove the stopper bolt whilst motor is apart. Thanks for your help bro.

if you are on about the stopper of the auto decomp then yes. let the ADC hit the cam bolt instead.
