sprocket changes to lower top speed

Has anyone experimented with the number of teeth to lower the top speed? Which sprocket is best to change? It seems to be set up for wide open spaces, which I am short of. Thanks

I would not put anything smaller than a 13 tooth on the front. I run a 13X48 on my 501 and sometimes it is a little to low. In woods ridding it`s fine for me. Try a 14 first and see how you like it before doing anything else. Anything smaller than a 13 will eat the swingarm slider up, so 13 or 14 in the front. One of these should suit what you want to do and is also the least expensive way. Hope this helps.

Jadhusa,
It is true that your bike is slightly better suited to smoother, faster trails (I know this because your bike was my bike not too long ago) :D but do not forget that the trail condition now is very soft and wet.As the conditions improve and the snow melts you will notice an improvement.I think you are running a 13 front 48 rear which is a pretty good balance. You may find lower gearing a little abrupt in the lower gears.Glad to hear you are riding and hope you enjoy it as much as i did.......nsman

i recently changed the gearing on my 99 600
when i origanlly bought the bike it had 15 / 42 gearing whitch was a bit hard for tight trails i then changed that to a 13 / 42 whitch made a huge improvement but still bit of stall city in the tight rocky stuff but good every where else it now has 13 / 49 whitch is too low i can pull 6th half way down my street only gets to about 140 150 or so b4 hitting the rev limiter
but did make a huge difference with tight trails sooo much easier
but on the mx track it req to many gear changes so i will be getting a 14 and 15 counter shaft sprocket in the next 2 weeks and be trialing them to see if i can hold the gears a bit longer

cheers doug
