Just throwing this out there.
So far we have half a dozen going. It'll be April4,5&6. I'd like to set up base camp at the old AT&T radio site at Turquoise Mtn. 12 miles n/e of Baker California. This will be a DRY camp. I'll haul 110 gallons in for the cause.

One day will be riding East throught Cedar Cyn, Lanfair Valley and eventually the Colorado River.

Day2 will be west through Afton Canyon, then north to Fort Irwwin, then east to Dumont Dunes.

Please let me know what you think and give a show of interest. Then I'll know how much firewood to bring.

Tom

Hey there tr1200, this sounds interesting. I cannot commit just yet but it is on my short list. How many miles are you proposing in each day and how will land access, refueling, mechanical emergencies, etc. be handled? I'm up for this type of ride , just don't know how developed your plan is so far. Have you got the tolerance for accomplices on "Other Brands"?

Hey tom, If you have room, I think i am in. friday sat and sun...

I will call you later, I would like to go ride but work has been a killer lately. I got the seal kits for the waterpump from Dan at motoxotica, he had a couple of Orangebergs kits from australia. it is in and working well.

Good to hear from you Jared. I'll save room in the Tundra.

jack2u98, plans are still firming up but here's what I've got so far:
1. The choice of camp was to facilitate "green sticker" riding for those with no plates. It's also only 12 miles to gas/motel/food and other services. Not my first choice but a good compromise.

2. The guys I ride with are mechanicly talented for the most part and we've never left anyone hangin'. As the weekend approaches, if we don't have any good "recovery" vehicle in the group, I'll leave the 2007 Tundra at home (18mpg) and take the 96 Dodge 1-ton 4X4 4.10posi axled beast (8mpg) but we'll see.

3. I commited to haul in 100 gal water because it's a dry camp. I'm not eating in town and plan on bringing firewood for cooking and a warm social atmosphere.

4. The longest loop I can imagine doing would be 250 miles and on my bike would require two fuel stops (CalNevAri and Searchlight or Primm maybe).

So let me know if you have any suggestions or concerns.
Cheers
Tom

I'm kind of eyeing your trip, not sure if I can go or not, depends on work, blah blah blah.

I do have one question, how far between fuel stops? And what kind of riding are we talking about here, is it just mainly jeep roads and that sort of thing? Or is it a mix of tight, technical and jeep roads.

250 miles is some time in the saddle for sure!! I have not ridden in those area's you mentioned.

Thanks,

Dale "E" O

Hey Tom, I won't need room in your truck, I can bring mine, and thus a lot more water, fuel, wood etc. I just meant room in the group...

You can count on my being there, i just verified with the "real" boss that there is nothing already planned that weekend.

so just let me know what i need to bring. I have a couple of pop up awnings, a large propane camp stove, etc.

Jared

DalEO,
Most of the mileage is jeep trails. There'll be some short "side" trips available to test your skills. I'll try to plan fuel stops around 80 miles, 100 max. There'll be some green sticker guys going from base camp to no farther than Dumont Dunes (30miles away) but my main focus will be traversing the old Mojave Trail. It's pretty and serene with petroglyph sites and the possibility of seeing desert sheep, mountain lion, lynx, chuckar, deer, badger or mustangs - all of which I've seen on different treks through this area.

Also, it'll be a good time to get away for a weekend and chill with other "moto dudes".

Cheers-
Tom

I just scaled the mileage on the first leg of the first loop. All dirt from camp to Hwy 95 s/o the Ca/Nv border, then north to Calnevari for gas - 90 miles.

That will be the longest distance between fuel.

Tom

Just to clear things up a bit; nothing more than green sticker required in this area, correct? I don't know the maximum range on my 400 but it should cover 90 mi. of mostly jeep trails. I would not be going if I were planning on having a breakdown and am quite competent mechanically but I am just trying to determine the organization level for what sounds like a fairly large group (don't want the Sierra Club or land mgmt. types to get too curious). One additional question about the campsite, since I can't find it in google earth (do you know the co-ordinates.?) : how is the access for a 30 ft. class motorhome?

The ride on Saturday will be through an area requiring street-legal vehicles only. Some in the group will ride from camp in the "green sticker" area. On Sunday, the loop will be green-sticker. I would not have a problem getting my 31' motorhome to the camp, but the last couple miles has some large potholes.

The group should be less than 20, w/ less than 15 going through the preserve so special registraion/fees not required. But this IS on the internet, so if more show up - we'll have to wing it.

If you have any other questions or concerns- I'm pm-ing you my cell #.

Cheers-
Tom
ps- I've ridden the entire area with NO STICKERS on an old XR350 with no hassles, but can't officially make that recommendation. Some of the paved roads out there see maybe 5 cars a day :D .

Precise location - love that Google Earth!

Thanks for the location info, it looks like a great spot to have a group ride camp. How is the wind up on top there? And what is the best approach to the site, from Halloran Springs Rd off Death Valley Rd. or From I-15? Looking forward to this trip. JD

Definitely from I15 and Holloran Springs Rd. And the wind can be intense at times.

All I know is- I have a large chunk of pig, and perfectly seasoned apple-wood logs to BBQ with, and if the wind's too high, we'll be at the base of the mountain on the north-east side. That's not but a 1/4 mile from those coordinates.

Sounds good

Just at a glance sounds good. Could someone draw a line map so people that have never been there could find it. Also some of the family might want to come if there is easy trails close by camp. And I also have a 35' motorhome???
Thanks Jeff

Coronaberg-
Shouldn't be a problem with a motorhome. Just understand it's self-contained and in the sticks on BLM land (no hookups). The road's not bad and I'll work on a stick map. Basicly, from Corona it's 15 north to Holloran Springs Road. Turn left and follow markers several miles to camp. Any ?, call me at 559-304-3577.
