sprague springs made

Just to let you know that I have had some sprague springs produced that are of superior quality to the ones fitted OEM. as previously said on UHE, the springs are inferior from the factory and don't expand between each part while over stretching in the gaps.

the ones i've had made are weird feeling things and only make sense when opened out and fitted. uueerr missus! anyway, after initial tests by owners the starters are getting the thumbs up. I'll be selling them along with enough shims (2) and instructions for anyone to do the job of the sprague and the starter clutch at home.

expect £15 to be the total.

I'm gonna guess the shims are for the torque limiter gear, so it won't break free so easily.

I think it's fantastic that you're offering this Taffy!
I cut 20mm from my stock spring and it's been working real well. It will however, slip if the outdoor temps are freezing the first couple of tries. I'll keep your kit in mind for the next time I have my side case off to repair weep hole leakage.

I'll put my ignorance on public display. I understand the principles of shimming the torque gear limiter, but where does the spring go?

I thought the gear limiter was what caused the starter to spin. Either way, I think I need the kit if someone can tell me where to install the spring

he's solving problems with both by replacing the spring that holds the inner freewheel of the sprague together
as well as shimming the torque limiter.

I looked at the factory repair manual under the section about servicing the freewheel and still don't see a spring.

Here's a website that goes into a fair amount of detail involving the sprague. It's from a Ducati but basically the same as found in the Husaberg and other MC's. You'll see the small spring that Taffy has upgraded. I cut 20mm off the factory spring and had much improved GRAB. Rather than deal with doing that modification, I think it's fantastic that Taffy has gone to the trouble to put a kit together to deal with the sprague along with the torque limiter.

yep, the shims go in the torque limiter or starter clutch as i call it. the spring has nowt to do with the freewheel (known as the 'inner gear') but fits strictly round the sprague bearing itself.

I'm having concerns though over two freewheels - brand new - that i have sold in the past 2 months, more of which in another thread i'll start soon enough. I have an engine coming back in destroyed and the problem (he says) is the freewheel losing some teeth and then jumping into the timing chain.

this happened to another customer last week, two teeth off the freewheel. cam timing changed = luckily that was all. i built the former and not the latter so, right now i have no proof of anything. both have had the torque limiter done though and one has the new spring and one the old way (shortening).

If it's confirmed, I will start a thread on 'Freewheel (teeth) problems'.

I cut 20mm off the factory spring and had much improved GRAB

since my eyes have trouble redoing the stock spring, i use a spring from a 40mm fork seal. after that, i just replace the inner freewheel. (in the process as we speak).

the young lad down dorset way had my spring in while the sidecarcross bloke didn't. i'm pretty sure the spring has little to do with it - infact i'm certain.

had a word with graham at mid-west today and he said that it was well known to be riders hitting the starter button as they were riding. mmm?
