Split carb boot is it common?

I'm slowly getting to know the new to me 2008 FE 450 and in general I am happy with it. It is the first Berg that I have had and the first euro dirt bike so there is a lot to pick up and I have been trawling through the Doc which is huge compared to what it looks like at first glance.

One of the issues I have had is that the bike seemed to stall a bit easy but was otherwise running OK. it was also popping from the exhaust on the over run but I thought this may be normal.
I lowered the gearing and thought that that would help but it still has not been right.

I read a few threads and had already set the valves so was confident this was right and was just starting to get the carb off when I found my carb boot exactly the same as this one on another thread. It certainly makes the problem solving a lot simpler and i can;t wait to try it again when it is fixed.

What is the likely cause of this?

It happens. It looks like it may have been over tightened. Usually it's just age that gets them.

the stock clamps are really thin, when you overtighten them they twist one side digs in from the outside and being so close to the end of the intake spigot they can start to make the boot roll over on the alloy

2 solutions; not so tight on the oem clamps or two wider clamps that touch each other in the middle then they cant roll over or pop the boot off.

also but not related to this failure I don't think the boot rubbers (big on on the other side also) are very UV resistant, sun kills them

I have a 2008 fe550 happened to me this summer with 110 hours. Happened to my buddy the same ride same day on his 2008 fe450 with 50 hours. Ordered a couple of replacements and learned the hard way to carry a small quantiy of duct tape wrapped to itself in my tool pouch.

very annoying. The swedes used to have allow inside the rubber, but that was when the boot bolted to the cylinder. I am trying to not over tighten and see what happens. I carry a spare boot and vulcanising tape. That lean popping noise seems to be a warning to check rubber or clean oil from air cleaner boot.
