Speedometer cable positioning?

I’m reinstalling the original speedometer on my 2002 FE650, I need to get a new speedometer cable, and trying to figure out how long it should be. I’m not sure how to measure, can’t really figure out exactly how the original cable ran. In front of the fork? Behind the fork? There is no cable holder on that side on my bike, but I suspect one would be necessary?
If anyone has an old(er) bike with the analogue speed cable (the one that has a cable that actually spins!) could you please snap a pic and post so I can see how it should run? So far google hasn’t been of any help!

there are two lengths. 1080mm up to 1999 and 1010mm from 1999-2002. generally the 1010mm is better for the road full stop.

you get rid of the slop by angling the speedo drive exit down slightly....or vice-versa. the 1989-1998s needed a huge slotted guide but the 1999-2002s don't, they need a single hole and the speedo goes down infront of the fork.

cheers
