Speedo and electrical issues..

Hi all.
I have a 2004 Fe450e with only 80 hours on the hour meter.
Now, here is the issue.
I tried starting it and it cranked over then just clicked, the battery was dead. Well, I thought it was the battery. Anyway, I disconnected the battery and took it out. Shortly before that my enduro computer, the original Husaberg one stopped working and everything was dead too. I managed to get that fixed, it was wet somewhere after a good days ride in the rain.
The hour meter, the odometer is now showing zero!
The hour meter doesn't work when the engine is running but the odometer and all other functions are working fine.
I now have a bike that has done 1KM, :D
This is bloody wierd 8O
I have the battery on charge and I am hoping it is just the battery, but for some strange reason the computer has had a shock to the system and reset everything and I was thinking it couldn't be done....
I have no idea why the hour meter is not working though, can someone help me out or give me any clues as to what has happened?
It would be nice to get that working again, where is the wire and where does it go to get the engine hours?
The computer now only comes on when the button is pushed or the wheel is turned. It used to come on at the first push of the e-start, now it doesn't but it still works fine bar the hour meter....
I am stumped...

Dunno what the problem is, but AFAIK the engine hours are actually wheel turning hours, ie how often does the speedo turn o, so no connection to the ignition as such.

Mine also just comes on when wheel is turning or a button is pushed. Also with the ignition key off, but only with the "exotic" red background light when ignintion key is on.

Guess that's of no help to you......by the way

And BTW,

I have another issue with mine.. The speedo will only show speeds of up to around 90 Km/h. If giong faster is just shows Zero, and shuts off again after its 20 sec dalay. So its not getting the pulses from pickup.

Bought a new pickup but still the same. Drilled my caliper a little with a 12 mm drill to get pickup closer to magnet... still leaving 5 threads or so, but the hex head of pickup is a little countersunk now. Distance from Pickup to magnet is 2-3 mm.

Still the same.

Has anyone had any luck in putting a new magnet ???? or what is my problem. Speedo is NEW.

Sorry to hijack,

Anders. DK

I have had some problems with mine since the force ride, I think due to whacking it on a tree or something. anyway my prob was the backlight not working / working intermittently, and the display was a little hazy. I tried pulling it apart once before but got stalled at getting the circuit board out.

I tried it again last week, got the board out and swapped it with another speedo board (same model) and it worked fine, so maybe there are some fragile components inside, which may also be the cause of the pickup woes, because mine was doing a similar thing with not recording the speed properly, and as a result my odometer jumped 1000km over 20 hours or so.

I did find one curious problem, when I re fitted the speedo face, I used some super glue to reinforce some cracks in the clear plastic behind the rubber face of the speedo, and apparently the vapours of the superglue (cyanoacrylate) must carry some of the acrylic based adhesive, and proceeded to not just fog up the LCD screen on the speedo, but also render the contacts on the 3 buttons useless! it took a good 15 - 20 minutes of cleaning with carby / throttle body cleaner and various rags / tissue paper to clean the screen, but it did eventually work, and a heap of time spraying into the buttons and working them round, then blowing out with compresed air before it seemed to clean up and work properly again.

Hi,

My speedo is brand new, and it's the old type with blue/yellow stripes on it and buttons on a seperate "remote"

The on I just replaced was same model and intermittet as you describe and when taking it apart various componens came out that had fallen off the PCB.

So yes, they defenately are not the strongest build.

Thanks everyone, interesting comments. I think I will look at the wheel, I didn't know the engine hours went off the wheel?
I was looking for something on the engine casing like the Yamaha hour meters?
Anyway, if this is so, then the reason it might be showing zero is the pick up or similar, but the speedo still works though, as does the odometer although it is now at 1km from my test ride...

I'm starting to have some issues with my computer. Had a decent impact, nothing major, but the bike hit the hard-packed ground with some force. After that it keeps losing the "temporary" settings, like trip meter, clock, avg speed, etc. Was hoping it was just a loose wire, this thread has me a little concerned.

Ok, found another thread that suggested replacing the battery in the computer to start, will do that first.
