Spark plug wrench - im having an absolute nightmare!

Ive come to check my valve clearance etc for the 1st time today. However ive got to the first step of taking my spark plug out and have ground to an instant halt!

The socket ive bought to do the job is slightly to wide to fit between the gap in the engine where the spark plug is.

As a result ive spent my saturday driving around hull to numerous bike shops and tool shops and have found nothing.

I was wondering if ne one could tell me what they are using to get the job done and where they've got it from because i am having an absolute nightmare!

hope someone can help!! :)

I use the wrench that came with the tool kit for my bike, no drama's. You didn't get a tool kit when you bought your bike?

Similar situation when I got my bike, no tool kit, came to change the plug and couldn't get anything to fit between the gap in the rocker cover above the plug. I got one of those old pressed steel box spanners from ebay which does the trick perfectly, think it was 14mm but could be wrong on that, less than a fiver so cheap enough. Check out item number 310105591967 on ebay and you'll see what I mean.

Hey Den
I would try a lawnmower/chain saw shop as they usually carry the cheap thin walled plug wrenches. Lowes or Home Depot here in the states also carry plug wrenches. Don't know if you have stores like that in the UK.

Sorry that something so simple has become such a hassle. I thought that only happened to me!

i just pulled an old plug socket and took it to the bench grinder, ground down 2 sides and it fits perfectly. i didn't get a tool kit with my bike either.

you need a box socket which draper sell, also the OEM box socket is £12.

I just use the standard plug socket in my halfords socket set.

You have to angle it in low. Undo the plug about 1/2 turn - remove socket same as put in (angled low) remove plug by hand.

Install as reverse. Works fine once yo get the right technique (as everything with a berg).

Hey dennis. Ive got a spark plug wrench which im pretty sure i got from halfords. Its got a universal joint built into it with a spring on the u-joint and a plastic coated blue handle (described it in case you want to go hunt one down). As mentioned attack the plug from the side rather than straight down. Once youre over the top of the plug it should straighten up. The u-joint really helps when removing plug with the engine in the bike. Once cracked i also spin it out by hand. When replacing spin it in by hand to avoid cross threading or use some rubber tube. Oh remember to blast the spark plug hole with compressed air if possible BEFORE you remobe the plug, just stops any cr4p goin into the cylinder when you take the plug out.

thanks for all the respone guys! i ended up going back to halfords and bought the bit that would fit originally. My mate from pirtek took it to work and got about 2mm taken off the diameter on the lathe. After that it fit like a glove, well a very tight one ha.

So all that been well i check my valves for the first time last night, took me a fair while and felt like quite a bit of hassle. but was all good. one valve needed a very slight tweak, so i was happy with that. Hopefully will be abit quicker at it next time.

gona get the oil and filter done tonight me thinks, so will be ready to go for the weekend, just hope the weather stays as it is for abit :D

cheers
Den
