My piston and spark plug look real bad. Black gunk.

There was a minor clipping sound at idle and now it doesn't want to idle.

Oil,springs and cam chain look good, not much metal in the screen or magnet.

I am hopeing it's just a valve adjustment or maybe I didn't tighten the clutch nut enough.

Both my feeler gauges are soaking in WD-40 so I can read them.

.010" or .012" ? I'm at 6000ft +

Should I clean the piston ?

Is it time to open the carb ?

change the oil :D

And remember choose your oil based on your life:
If you do not have a strict monthly budget -- Choose Motorex
If you do not worry about small details in life -- Choose Delo 400
If you worry about small details in life -- Choose Motul
If you like to be always different in life -- Choose Rotella

Can't be any simpler

It can't be.

All I can find is Ams-oil and I think that could be the problem. They are one of those 4 hour paid advertisement programs on the radio.

I change it every 500 miles and it realy did look good. I can't find non-LE dello. 7 times in 4000 miles.

if I were as worried as you sound id pull the whole engine down and check it over

clunking sound... check the nuts on the countershaft and the end of the crank

black dry gunk = too rich

black goo / wet gunk is from oil burning, might be air filter oil but you never know.

I think your right about the air filter oil. I didn't think about that, it was still a little damp with gas when I oiled it too. I am a light filter oiler and it's pretty dirty with some dark blue spots.

I just checked it and it came off pretty easy, I kicked it over last night with the throtle open so it's had gas on it. If I work it into my fiengertips it's almost blue. A little crusty.

It happened because I was reving it at the 2000lb bulls and zig-zaging the rest of the heard through the sage. I only warmed it up the first time I did it.

Oh, and it wasn't that fun, in fact it wasn't fun at all. Not even on a horse.

I think 500 miles is too long for an oil change F=.
This is just my opinion of course. But you know. The oil capacity is quite small on these bikes, like 1 liter.
Have you noticed how fast the clean looking oil darkens up in the sight glass. Motorex is pretty clear and shows
you well.
I go between 3 and 5 hours or 2 to 3 rides per oil change. Average miles are probably 120 per oil change.

O.K. I will up the oil changeing, It had to be the filter oil.

So now how should I clean the piston ? It scrapes off real easy with with wood or plastic.

If the sparkplug was wet and oily then as bushmechanic said the bike is probably running rich.
So what I would do in that case was replace the plug and experiment with turning the fuel screw
in 1/4 turn. See how it runs and if it still oils up after several rides go in another 1/4 or re-jet the carb
leaner for higher altitudes. Your at 6,000 right?

Pollo

I think that is right too. I wasn't sure if it was leaner for higher up or richer. Since I'm taking the carb off I think I'll take the head off and clean the piston. There is a little hesitation going up one of the hills I ride. I was thinking maybe the exaust pipe wanted some more help too.

Also, all they have in town for oil is 5W 30 in a synthetic.

Dude, I'm in Idaho.
I wish I had those options.

So I had to buy a new feeler gauge because my other 2 were not working out. I checked the valves and they seem to tight, I can't get the feeler in there at all at TDC. It doesn't have .010 so I'm going with .011 or .279mm. Is that right ? Or is .005" .127mm or .004" .102mm right ?

I also put in some Lucas 5w-30 SAE synthetic (americ's finest motor oil). I think it needs a few oil changes in a row to try to clean the gunk out. I like it better already after 10 laps but its a little dark after that and it just seems to be running hot.

I think I over tightened a head bolt too.

That was yesterday. I tried to chase a big bull away and it laid down instead. I had to go get a whip.
