So like an old love affair that just can't let go I bought a 2007 FE650 with 14 hours on it It was recently cleaned and new battery but then sat for a few months until I picked it up. It starts with a few pumps on the throttle but then dies right away. I think the jet is plugged???

I also bought a nice 2005 FE550 and it runs perfect. But the water pump drain hole and or gasket is weeping a bit of coolant and even feels a bit oily. I know this is a common problem on this bike. It has 70 hours on it. Suggestions?

Im going to work for 2 weeks but I want to get parts or a plan in place to get these beasts ride ready when I get back from my shift. Thanks.

brad: you can pull the pilot jet out of the 650 by removing the drain plug and iirc, tilting the carb a little. make sure the screwdriver you use on the jet fits well. if you use a small mirror, you can see the position of the jet next to the main jet. when removed, try to look thru the jet. bet you can't. cut a 2" piece of about 16ga wire, strip it, and use a single strand to clean the jet along with brake cleaner or a like solvent. dry and replace and bob's your uncle.
on the 550, i would order two seals for the pump shaft, and at least three small shaft o-rings and keep them on hand until it becomes more of a cosmetic problem. these are parts it's good to keep on hand.

i do an extra thick sidecover gasket and new polyamide bearing as well as the gasket for the water pump, the seal, the WJ o ring and shafy o ring. I also put in two copper wshers to draw out the sledge plate less the key falls off. this put the seal on a new area of the shaft. seems to work...

just snag a wire out of your wire brush for cleaning out the jet.
