ok i am now a bit cheesed off, just replaced cam chain, cam & bearings/rocker bearings total cost £200 quid. yes the chain was goosed the cam very light pick up marks but still usable. all back together starts ok but still sounds bad .all adjusted up correct I am thinking it could be a bearing on its way out? "has any one done a rebuild of late" if so at wot cost and wot was replaced.
not sure i like these 4strokes never had all this with the old 2smoke

try and give us a diagnosis of the noises you are getting?

tappety?
rumbly?
knocking?
uneven?

to start a the beginning on an oil change i had a bit of alloy shinny bits in my steel filter and a rattle on engine so i removed the cam tensioner to check it it was maxed out, so i replaced the chain. The cam had some light marks on it so when i went for my chain i showed the mechanic my cylinder head /rocker bearings-he suggested that they would need replacing and as such the cam as well i agreed but needed to be told as i dont pretend to be up to speed on 4strokes!all rebuilt all checked double checked started no probes still noise
it sounds rattley/rummbley > louder on clutch side, thats why i thought it was camchain. also i was getting a bit of metal on the sump magnet/ /not had any alloy after chain replaced but still had a little on sump magnet /haven't run or droped the oil after cam replaced.
i have heard a newish bike and it sounds sweet compered to my motor and i dont want to cause major damage if something is on its way out but i am a bit pissed as i have only done about 30hrs max on the bike since i bought it and its been one thing after another but this time it not just time but big money and i have hardly given it any stick at all as i have just been getting used to riding 500 4stroke when the only crossers i have had 250 and it is a massive difference in riding technique.just thought if i do a full rebuild then i know were i stand motor wise!

bet ur sorry u asked now

from where i'm sitting i can't say even roughly whqat i think it is. that's a tough one that!

maybe some of the other lads here can help?

good luck fella!

What you are hearing is probably the loose cam chain.

You should have replaced the chain, the cam chain sprocket and the sliding tensioner from the 2004-2005 models.

Do a search on cam chain tensioners.

DCR seem to be quite reasonable i just had my engine to them, they reseated the valves, new tappet bolts, main bearings, rings, gear selector forks and helicoiled something for me, charged me £300.... mind you thats half what my bikes worth haha

how do you adjust the valve clearance ? if you are using a wide
feeler gauge you can get caught out by giving it too much clearance .

check and double check the clearance , use the 1/8 turn out principle .

if you have way too much clearance it will rattle its brains out .
