Solution for ignition problems...Maybe

I am messing with the idea of retrofitting a japanese( I hope that is not a dirty word) ignition for older Bergs to replace the SEM at time of failure. My idea would involve making up a complete package, stator, flywheel, wiring and instructions all in one kit. I am just getting started with this idea and wanted to get some feedback from all of you first before proceeding. I own a 96 or a 97 FE600E, not sure yet, and have tried to pick through the pieces on the forums to get info. I need to know the wattage of the systems, both e-start and not. Are they all the same? Are there different diameters? etc. If mine on my bike fails, I will do this. I realize this may involve some machining to the parts as well as figuring out the timming aspects (marks on parts). Is this something people would be interested in?

Thanks,

I seem to remember a member from over seas having done this. I also know that our resident god (dale) has toyed with the idea as well but has I believe decided it was cost prohibative. if you can do it i am would be interested.

this is the deciding factor for me selling the current bike and dropping the cash on a newer one.

volvonut,

I have an 02 FC550 with the SEM system installed and have not yet had mine go in the crapper yet. When it does decide to fry itself I would indeed be interested in a better/upgraded ignition to retrofit in place of the stock unit. Don't know if you have plans to design for the 2002 model year but I have thought the same thing as you are describing above. There has got to be a better solution than replacing a $400+ ignition every other year as part of our routine maint.

The info I found regarding my bike is that the stator puts out 12V @ 70W. If the bike has the e start and/or lighting kit the bike than has a second out which is also 70W.

Regards,

Sandskipper, others,

Thanks for the information! I really thought I would have got a lot more replys than this already, so I will retrofit mine and just post the details on what will be needed when I finish.

I think many would be interested but are concerned that it may not work for the 1999-2003 models. If something like a retrofit could happen and not get into the extreme price range I would be interested. I have the feeling this could be a $1,000+ upgrade but keep us posted on your research! Member hribman, did a retrofit from a KTM and has pics in his gallery.

Since enduro is a day around activity +200W is good but 150W is okay too.
