So what battery charger do I really need?

I thought I would memorialize this for easy retrival.

As of 10/11/2010 Optimate has quite a few choices in battery chargers based on their original design.

The Optimate "3" is for batteries 2ah (amp hours) -32ah
The Optmate "3+" is for batteries 2ah - 45ah
The Optimate "4" is for batteries 0ah - 75ah ( .8amp basic charging rate)
The Optimate "5" is for batteries 7.5 - 120ah ( 2.5 amp basic charging rate)
The Optimate "6" is for batteries 15ah - 240ah ( 5 amp basic charging rate)

The Yuasa YTZ7S battery capacity is 6 amp hours, so the correct Optimate charger for your 2001 - 2011 Berg would be either the 3, 3+ or 4.

For a car, truck or motorhome the 5 or 6 may be more appropriate but you can still use the lower powered chargers on them, it will just take longer to fully charge.

Yuasa claims that a lead acid battery can lose 50% of its charge in two weeks. A very good reason to always keep them plugged in when not in use.

I have a couple of CTEKS also, but have found that they tend to go into an error mode rather easy lately for reasons that I cannot figure out. It may be that they are just getting old. To be fair I have had one of 4 Optimates fail so far too.

I have 3 C-Teks, the oldest is about 3 years. All good so far, peace of mind.

I have used Optimates for years on my bikes. The 'Berg is hooked up to an Optimate III.

Plug it in as soon as the bike is in the garage; don't touch it again until you take the bike out again. The battery will last the best part of a decade.

What more do you want?

Yeah, I've great experience using the Optimate, never had a problem with this & the Berg.

Finally, I am an expert! I sell battery chargers for a living, so I know a thing or two about this subject. I have access to any and every time of charger out there. Have tested the Optimate, C-Tek, Battery Tender, ChargeTek and about 100 others. In my opinion, far and away the best motorcycle sized charger is the BatteryMinder Plus. These use a high frequency electronic pulse that dissolves sulfation and restores lost capacity. I've seen these restore batteries that were otherwise junk.

or (shamless plug),

buy one here.

I use a ctek 4003, great alrounder, its a switch mode type of smart charger, does small bike batteries, lead acid/AGM batteries up to around 100ah out of 4wd or cars.

pretty happy with it, great bit of kit!

These are on sale tomorrow for those in Oz with access to Aldi.

Looks exactly like a CTek on the outside, so if they've cloned the inside too, it might be a good deal. I've got a bit of Aldi stuff over the years, tools and electronics as well as food, and its good value stuff.
