So finally my bike arrives...these things are different

Hey guys,
So last Friday comes and my bike arrives from interstate (04 FE 550). A mate went to check it out interstate and gave it the thumbs up so I bought it and had it shipped up.

It's pretty clean and once I give it the once over and a set up she'll be good to go. So I'm looking over it and thinking this is very different from my prized 520 EXC and the previous Husky's I've owned.

I throw a leg over prime the kicker and kick it, it's about that time I seem to recall reading something about having the side stand down when you kick these things...it's sheared my stand spring in half....F#!K it I thought..but my fault so it's all good...lets go again

Second go fires into life straight away, no choke, no throttle...happy days engine makes the obligitory Husaberg drone...all good.

So I zip tie the stand up in place and shoot out for a quick spin up the road....funny feel in the handling department just like the last Berg I rode...bu tI think I'll get used to it and turns like a cat on carpet...cool

All until I back off the throttle and theres this death rattle I can hear (no helmet) (I know)...so I think jeeezzzz this things a time bomb....but it seems odd because the engine actually sounds really tight.

On the gas again, off the gas rattle rattle rattle....what the F$#K is that noise. I stop get off the bike give it a few revs...no noise....back on, up the foot path rattle rattle rattle...So I come back to the shop shut it down and walk away in disgust.

So hours later a mate / customer comes in and after giving me a heap of **** about having a dirt bike in a custom Harley shop he tells me it's really cool that they have floating front discs...which he taps....rattle rattle rattle....

Anyway, with that figured I've got it apart now and giving it the full on once over and getting it set up for some serious riding...just thought I'd share my stupidity...these things seem quite well designed, quirky but cool, with some very basic strong ideas in place....race bred...no doubt.

Cheers

Hope it all works out well for you pilot. Keep the valves within spec and change the oil frequently. Just did my oil last night after 3 hours. Mines got 87 hours on it, the oil drain plug was virtually clean without any fragments and I put the Motorex 10W 50 in iit.

Hey there 520pilot,

just on the topic of rattles, the chain often contacts the nain side tubes of the fraim - at least on the 200 - 2008 models, it makes a hell of a clatter on deceleration particularly, u understand it is only the master link that can suffer from it, check these two points and turn the master link around so the split clip is onthe inside, it may help avoid a chain failure.

Thanks Boys,
I'll take all on board...I've 3/4 stripped it down already to go over it and make everything right I'm working the set up as follows:

Fit radiator overflow / re drain bottle
Service forks....any tips..?
Service motor / check clearances
Re-pack steering and swingarm bearings
Check wheel bearings
set correct sag
Replace chain and sprocket....advised 14 / 48 is the go for tight and open stuff
air cleaner
fit fork bleeder valves
Get some real tyres on it
general tighten / Loctite / torque up etc
Fitting Magura SX bars...I like them a little straighter than the EX bend
Add a few little trick bits
and consider an alloy bash plate as it has a plastic one that I'm guessing is genuine
my plan is to ride it a few times then work out if I need to valve the forks etc

Any other tips are welcome...?

Cheers

if you had your location in your info i wouldn't have to ask where you are going to ride it  . but since you call them" tyres", i'd guess you don't live near me 8)
i found that a 13/48 was the better combo for the rocky hills and mountain trails we use.

Sorry Ned,
I think I've fixed that problem...I googled it and it's only 7540 miles..

Cheers

congrats on the new ride. sounds sweet. i really liked the 550 motor when i rode one.
my suggestions would be to make sure the valves are spot on, use the 1/8 turn method, change the oil regularly and replace parts with only the spec part.
like what ever wt oil the manual says, use it, what ever battery the manual says, use it.
i think that once you start reengineering these bikes, they revolt.
the gearing is a bit of a personal preference. its easy to change the front gear up or down one tooth and see a huge change.
i would practice the kick start drill. berg have been known to need a good boot.
if you're really up for a challenge, try to get it into neutral when its running.
tuning the suspension changes the bike pretty quickly, as does dropping/raising the forks in the triples and adjusting the rear sag.
as far as the distance from your location and mine, on my world map its only 14.75"

Thanks for the info tuts,
It might only be 14.75" but last time I hit Vegas it was a 14 hour flight to LA..3 days drinking with my family in Redlands then about a 6 hour trip on the bikes out accros the desert....mind you the next 4 days based out of New York New York was a blast...from what I can remember...

I'm with you on the do it by the book thing...I'm pretty anal when it comes to making the bike work perfectly, although there's some pretty good tips to be found here..

Cheers

From what I know and what has been recommended on this site: 14/51 is what you´re looking for

I´m surprised that your FE is having a floated front disc - , but hey, this is a nice upgrade from the former owner
