i bought a 650 recently and pull the head off as it was smoking and carried out a cylinder leak off by putting the oil its using into bore in 2 weeks it has dropped about 3 mm. is this acceptable to not have a bottom end rebuild? And any ideas what else could it be? was stood up for a while before purchase.Cheers guys :D

 :-# i'd better not. somebody else needs to take this

Hi,
I have not worked on a Berg 650 before but am a full time powersports mechanic. That amount of leakage past the rings sounds not too far out. Normally when a four stroke smokes it is either a rough or damaged cylinder bore, worn out piston rings, or too much ring end gap, leaking head gasket, or loose valve guides, leaking valve stem seals. Or some diesel or mixed gas in the fuel tank lol! Seen it too many times! If you have the head off already shine a light in the intake and exhaust tract and see if there is any oily residue on the valve stems, which would point to valve stem seals.

Hope this helps, and all the best,

Dan

or in some very odd setups a crazy amount of oil going from the breather into the airbox

I don't know that your method of checking leak down is approved. None the less there were several things to be checked before removing the cylinder head. Oil in the breather box as stated by bushie is the first one. Proper oil level would be another. An issue with the crankcase reed might be another. Performing an actual cylinder leak down with a cylinder leak down tester would also have been preferred.

they generally smoke like that when the piston and liner are worn. suggest that you take the head off and get it to BDC, check what you can see of the bore there.

get ready to put a new HG on it and button it up or to go the whole hog....

thanks people think im going to do a head rebuild and go from there. Sure i'll be back on for further advise

FWIW if i had just bought an 03 with any hint of a problem id pull it all apart and check it over.... big end ... mains cam follower brgs .... it might be cheaper in the long run

fwiw, if most people had just bought a 13 yo husaberg for $x, getting them to pay $xx for repairs prolly wasn't in the budget. but i'm proud that these beasts are still in relatively one piece after that long.
