Smokin!

Hi All,
Might not be anything to worry about but any of you have issues with smokin at tickover? Seems to be that when I'm nippin round town and get stuck at lights for more than a couple of minutes the exhaust fumes become smoky. During normal running the fumes are clear (or maybe because they're behind me I cant see them!), and after I take off when the light changes,( in about the time it takes me to get into second) the fumes go back to normal? The fumes are - in my limited knowledge - not oily, they look too light. I'm thinking then water...? Leaky gasket....?
This bike has no fan to cool the water system, does that have something to do with it?
Regular servicing done - oil/filters every 3 hrs etc.
So... Is sitting at the traffic lights looking like a 70's rock band being raised up through the stage in a cloud of smoke a common problem with anyone else???
Thanks

who is this imposter?
where has he taken the real taffy?
what do we have to do to make sure he can't get back?
sort of like fake b**bs can be better...

i just stopped by here cause they were about to be smokin.....

....are you saying that i might look like water/coolant vapor?
...do you use/loss any coolant?
...coolant usually smells sugary sweet.

tuts
:bounce3:

Hi Taffy
If you have time is there any chance of a 'Balls Out' version of what you know of the bike - seems he has face planted more than one stoppie (bent brake disc). Wiring practically fully replaced etc as discussed on another topic. Now it looks like a top end rebuild...
Cheers

....well no, it's a strip and rebuild!

you can pull the head off and turn the engine to BDC and see what you can there. i think you'll see what you need to and know that you need to go further.

i did 2 470s at the same time, the first one heeded my warning and went for a flat top and he said 'nah!' and wanted the HC option.

i just think the rings have gouged the nikasil wall or something similar....

i'm with jampe...valve guides/ seals

You would think valve guides/seals. It just seems that 470's in general have piston/ring/ and liner issues in reguards to smoking. I speak from personal experience. Still, its easy enough to put in a fresh set of valve seals to fiind out (it didnt ework for me).

and json thought it was smokin' because he flipped it

That's what I told him anyways.....that's my story and I'm sticking to it

Well.... Thanks all for the ideas and input.

Went down tonight and gave the berg a good seeing to....
Head off, thankfully very little scoring. Piston and sleeve normal no major scratches.
Fitted new gasket, spark plug, oil flushed with cheap stuff then a dose of belray thumper with a new filter, new air filter, refill water system, with loctite and copper grease as required!

Made a world of difference already....

Almost lost hope when TAFFY suggested it might be a rebuild so close to decent weather...... But they are just so much fun to ride you can't give up on a berg...Think your right BERGER/JAMPE, mine's just a bit of a smoker if its idle for too long.... Couldn't have bought a better bike to fit my personality really!

Top end replacing cam chain, valves, valve guides, valve springs in the next few weeks. That's the plan to keep it on the road till the end of summer...

Then i'll split the case (famous last words)

have a word and i'll let you know what went in to it....

Cheers once again Taffy
