Smaller Fuel Tank for FX501?

I have a 1999 FX501 set up as a motard and think I'd prefer a "regular" tank without the extension that my bike has. Any general guidelines on what other model/year tanks would work on this bike; and if I can use the seat it has or need to change ot also to match the tank?

thanks,
Walter

wpbarlow,

Are you asking for a smaller tank??? I don't believe that there are any after market tanks, big or small, for the Husabergs. Not positive on that but almost sure. There are a few aftermarket external tanks that can be added to your bike, (one behind the number plate, and one under the seat), but this is added fuel capacity. Someone else may be by shortly to correct but to the best of my knowledge, no, there are no smaller sized tanks available for the Berg. There has been much interest on the subject of a larger capacity tank and a few comments on a slimmer tank design which has been incorporated into the '06 machines.

Regards,

Clarke is going to do an oversized Husaberg tank. You heard it here first! It will be based off of the 06 tank which will fit earlier frames. Because of other tanks currently in the works, it might not get the green light until late December or early January. Look for an early Spring release. As for a smaller tank, is adding less fuel to your tank an option?

You could use a FC (MX) tank

1997-1999 should fit. But if you are after a slimmer tank a properly (carefully) used heat gun can do the trick. Taffy did it to his 02 and is pleased with the results. The longer and larger FX tank holds the fuel lower which helps lower the COG as I am sure you are already aware of. I don't think the FC tank is any slimmer where it counts.

1997-1999 should fit. ...

I assumed that a tank from another model of the 501 in the same generation would fit. I should have clarified my question to ask if any other tanks from other models would fit: or if I have to wait for a tank from my year to become available.

It's just going to be a sm/track day bike, so I'm not too concerned about tank width or lower cg. I just assumed the extra capacity was there because the model was built as a desert bike where the capacity would come in pretty handy.

thanks,
Walter

Walter,

Your model came with tank part # 160 001-05, which is for the FE, FX, and FEE.

The 99 FC had a smaller tank, part # 160 126-03. It does not need the fuel pump that is used with the larger tank.

You can download the 99 parts list at www.husaberg.se

In an e-mail dated today:

Ken

No decision has been made yet as to whether or not we will be producing this tank..

I will save your mail and let you know if/when we come up with anything..

Thanks

Just trying to keep things simple- like getting rid of the fuel pump on the lower tank- and keep things clean.

Well, I think Chris missed the meeting. My source for the start date is a little higher up the ladder. Chris is a good guy and all and if he told you that, then that's all he knows about it. I'll talk to Chris on Monday and get the scoop.

Is it the same beast as described here?

I don't think it would look like the CRF 450R tank. I know it would have a raised flat topped area for the dry break option and it would be enlarged enough to hold an extra gallon or so without getting fatter, if possible. For whatever reason, people tend to like 3.5 gallon tanks better than 4 plus gallon tanks so that's what Clarke aims for. Sometimes they get more, sometimes less but, that is the target. They are also more into making the tank look good too. Nobody really wants a tank that looks like a mini-fridge or a melted jelly bean sitting between their legs. It should look cool.

A 3.3g is already freaking huge, I think the bike is wide enough at the tank, wider and the tank hugs your legs, not the other way around. :D

Well let's hope this happens...
