SM speedo calibration

I've got an '05 FS650E that is an Aussie model that somehow showed up in the US. The speedo reads about 10 mph fast at 60 mph. Is there a wheel size calibration function? I see on the instruments there is a label that has a check mark for 17" kph. It's definately not reading in km though. It also says WS 1882 when the intruments come on. Any ideas?

The only help I can offer is the WS 1882 = tyre circumferance in mm. I have been told it is possable to change his setting to suit either 21 or 17 inch but I have not managed to discover how......... although the dealer that sold me mine had to change the speedo unit as I has the enduro kit fitted at purchase (my bike left the factory as an fs). take from that what you can.......

I was told if you unplug the speedo then remove the backup battery, replace the backup battery and as the speedo fires up you get the option of changing the WS setting (I tried all manner of fire up combinations but could not get the WS to flash which it should do to allow you to change it)..... good luck and let us know if you crack the code.

ps... I was told these instructions work for newer speedos and possably mine.

You almost got it, remove the plug that connects the bike to the mains power and run the speedo on the battery backup, but to change information and open up more or hide modes you need the tripmaster switch that mounts on the handlebar to scroll through it connects to the unused white plug from the speedo.
Im not sure if your using the older 04 speedo or the newer type but its the same for both, beware the plug on the tripmaster switch its not the same for both if you buy one.
I use the older 04 type as a tripmeter for rallys with the MD map reader as the numbers are bigger in the display.
The reason yo unplug from the mains is that the smart little speedo senses the connection its law you cant alter the factory settings for the road, simply unplug it set it up and plug it in again after, you get the light back as well. If you try to change the setting while plugged in it will go back to factory settings.
When you run on the backup battery its called competion mode and it lets you use the tripmaster switch move the speedo out of the big numeral area and plonk the trip meter in there for bigger numbers and better view whilst racing, thats the illegal bit for road use the speedo must always be visible.
When the speedo starts up the wheel size is the first mode that flashes and you have to hold the buttons some way ( i cant remenber ) to change. Have a play for a while you will work it out. I think maybe you can cut the red speedo wire to isolate it from the mains ( im not sure check it out )

I have the newer style dash and no tripmaster switch. According to the manual, 1882 is the correct WS setting for a 17 inch wheel. The question is can that value be changed to any number, say 1800? That would make the speedo much more accurate. There is no mention of that adjustment in the manual.

Yes in competition mode you can change the wheel size by scrolling with the up and down button on the tripmaster switch my 04 does so i imagine the later one is the same ( shoot me if im wrong i havnt tried a newer type ), the standard factory wheel size is set at 2205 for a 21 inch front wheel, i changed to 2210 or 2200 at 100kmh it was closer to the highway test road markers set down by the event organisers vehicle. I set mine up for the profile of the brand tyre i was using as it effects the measurement and i liked it to read 20 meters short over 1 km and it keeps you early for the the instructions on the route sheet.
If you overshoot a corner you can push the down button on trip 1 and take off 10 meters every push to recalibrate to the route map whilst riding. Hold either button down and it will add or subract quicker.
From memory i had no manual it took me hours of button pushing to get it changed but you can do it, i know that wheel calibration is the first calibration that appears in the mode sequence and you have to hold one button down at the right time to get it flashing and it will let you change by scrolling with the up down button.
The secret is a tripmaster switch once fitted it opens up the computer for more access.
The tripmaster part you need for the newer speedo is 54814073000 a have them priced at $150 is OZ.
This switch also allows you to disable unwanted modes on the screen so its not so cluttered like lap times 1 and 2, fastest speed, stop watch. the only modes you cant hide is hour meter and speedo. I kept the clock visible and set it to event time and run a backup wrist watch as well.
I used trip 1 for the race and reset to zero from call to call on the maps, then trip 2 for for overall Km for the day.
The speedo is still visible in a smaller screen but you can rotate it into the big area as you ride along on a transport section. We have been booked for speeding by the cops at these events.
I used this speedo as i had them as standard equipment back the and did not have to spend $800 on an ICO. I also had spares of these if i broke one.

After all that effort i took a wrong turn still got lost and scored a 45 minute panalty but i cant blame the speedo as they do the job well.
Whilst you may not want all the rally info ive added it for other members who might be interested.
You can change from KPH to MPH in the modes as i realise now your from the US and you got it in OZ.

Good info Orangebro...... Even tho I can change most functions and displays without the trip master switch I still cant get the WS to flash..... and yeah, mine is the 04 model.
Spot fiddy for the switch seems pricey but judging by the theme on another thread I should be able to get for a lot less from the US or UK.
Shame I didn't know this before I spent many hours pushing buttons in all logical and then random manners..... just need a switch.

Cheers bud.

Easy way to change wheel circumference

Last night i had a look at my 05 fs650e instruments. I had read about disconecting yhe black wire to access ws function. Aneway, unhook three wire connection for a second, then plug in(not all the way) at an angle so that the black wire doesnt touch. As soon as you can hold the function button down while it goes threw startup and wait for the program mode. Look for a ws on far left. Let go of button and push untill ws flashes. My half worn pilot power measured 72" = 1829mm. I used tape on the sidewall and measured the circ. by rolling the bike in the garage. I got it after a dozen trys but when plugging in fully it went off and on again and reset to default(1882) It took a few more attempts to get it to show ws on the menu, but all said, about 15 minits.

Now it reads perfect according to 3 permanent radar signs around town.
Does this mean my true gas mileage will be better than before? I tink so as it read idk, 4-6 mph fast.

I aure ah gud spelarr i swear, posting via phone...

Does anyone know if you can adjust the 08FE450. I put 17" wheels on mine and I just have to figure the 13% difference in my head. I would prefer to have it set to the sm because I do not care how fast I am going offroad lol.
