slow shutdown

hi gang, I have a new berg now, a 2003 fe 400e, which ran perfectly when i got it - about two weeks ago - i have used it extensively since but one day, poss. after lots of jumping the throttle shutdown became unpredictable and slow, sometimes it shutsdown straight away but most times its revs on and takes two seconds to reach idle, it then often stalls! i cleaned the carb but no different, and the cable is free. Any ideas chaps? Thanks, Jared.

Either a vacuum leak or a bent intake valve/ broken spring.

Sorry for the bad news.

The last time I had thay issue, I did what you did. I cleaned the carb and checked for vacuum leaks. I had no luck going through the carb nor could I see any obviouse problems other than the slide appeared worn. I replaced the carb and have not had that concern since.

thanks again, i'll spray some oil on the slide later to see if it stops temporally, if so the carb i guess. Jared

Sorry if I'm suggesting the simple or obvious, but could it be the throttle cable getting occasionally caught up around the steering somewhere & pulling it thru where it is ziptied to the frame & out of the carb anchor? Has the cable been pinched between the tripple clamp stops & the frame?

throttle cable run. 95% certain or is that 96%???? i can never remember!

Hey Crashenberg
I noticed a similar thing when i was experimenting with the ignition.
Could it be possible your three bolts holding your coils have come loose and effectively advanced your ignition to the max.
Maybe, possibly, perhaps, you may never know ..

Good luck

When I had my problem I could actually hear the slide bottom out on the stop. You may listen for that. That would verify or eliminate the throttle cable theory.

Nuther remotly possible thing, you haven't got sand down beside the choke slide (assuming you have the OEM Dellorto PHM carb) that is sometimes preventing it from closing off all the extra air thru the choke?
